Today, we pause to give thanks for the students, families, and educators who make Dallas stronger every single day. Thanksgiving reminds us that learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms, it happens around dinner tables, in conversations with loved ones, and in the small moments of connection that shape who we become. From everyone at the Dallas Education Collective, we’re grateful for this community and the countless people who pour into our kids. Wishing every Dallas family a warm, joyful, and restful Thanksgiving surrounded by the people who lift you up.

DISD students are off for the week as Thanksgiving break begins, and we hope every child across Dallas gets the chance to slow down, rest, and enjoy time with the people who matter most. This pause in the school year is more than a holiday, it’s a moment for our students to recharge, reset, and come back ready to learn and grow. Wishing all DISD families a safe, joyful, and restorative Thanksgiving break.

With 1 in 3 DISD students attending a D or F rank school, our mission is clear. DEC is focused on bringing resources to the students who need them most. We want to help families find higher-performing options, coordinate free academic support, and lift up campus partnerships that improve attendance, literacy, and post-grad readiness. Excited to share that our Executive Director, Nakia Douglas, recently joined Sarah Zubiate Bennett on the Let’s Talk Local podcast to discuss how Dallas can deliver world-class learning for every child. Dallas has roughly 144,000 economically disadvantaged students within DISD boundaries, and 40 percent of children living in poverty are not school-ready. These are not just stats. They are our neighbors and the future of our city. In the episode, you will hear why the Dallas Education Collective exists, how we are uniting partners across Dallas, and what it will take to tackle access, equity, and preparation for a fast-changing future. When educators are empowered and families are engaged, real learning happens. Dallas absolutely can and should learn from places that get it right. @DallasEdCo is studying what’s working across Texas and bringing successful models home. Here are a few images from DeSoto’s Early Childhood Center, a model of what’s possible.

Every student deserves a path to success—unfortunately, nearly 1 in 5 students never make it to graduation. This is a heartbreaking systemic failure for our students, families, communities and city. Public charter school options and partnerships like the Dallas Education Collective can rewrite this story, through the creation of learning environments that empower students, boost confidence, and ensure they cross the finish line. The data is clear: a student's future success in Dallas is too often tied to their zip code and background. Stark disparities in college readiness mean we are failing to prepare a huge segment of our future workforce for success. This isn't just an education issue; it's an economic and social imperative for our city. We need to shift our approach to one that actively closes these gaps, and Dallas Education Collective is leading the charge to build an innovative school tailored to the needs of underserved communities. Our goal is to ensure every student in Dallas has a real opportunity to succeed in college and beyond. Beyond a one-size-fits-all approach, public charter schools are built on a powerful partnership between parents, educators, and the community. This is where teacher empowerment thrives; instructors are given the professional freedom to design dynamic lessons and pioneer new teaching methods that truly resonate with students. This model also forges a strong alliance with families, viewing parents as essential partners in their child's education. This shared mission is backed by direct accountability, ensuring that the school’s innovative environment is laser-focused on achieving outstanding results and preparing every child for a vibrant future.
