It blurs your memory of what you actually wrote / are defending. Also, balance accepting criticisms w/ reasserting your own authority (cos you are now an authority!).

In English studies, 'Inner Circle' countries = English is mostly a 1st language (e.g. US, Aus); 'Outer Circle' = mostly 2nd lang (e.g. India, Ghana). I try to tell my students 'Inner Circle' happened by displacing/destroying whole populations. This passage helps that comparison.
