In the garden right now I can see a crow, a pigeon, a parakeet and … is this a woodpecker? (I’m trying to write out of doors. Without much success. Somerset Maugham did it daily. I think I need a small darkened room.)

This evening's Puffin count was bonkers! Good conditions and a minimum of 13,174 rafting birds logged; this was the highest count since 1934 and the earliest five-figure count ever.

Anyone remember the Mitchell Beazley guide. Out of curiosity, I got a copy off eBay for a trip down memory lane. I’m surprised how decent the illustrations are for a bird guide that’s almost 40 yrs old.
