This is an absolutely damning picture of how broken California's utility monopolies are. Edison likely caused the Eaton fire, and now they're going to make $70 million on the rebuild. Utilities earn a guaranteed profit on every dollar they spend. So they are incentivized to go with the most expensive rebuild option. Edison had two choices: 1 - Insulated overhead lines: $800K/mile (4x safer per dollar) 2 - Bury the lines: $4M/mile 5x the cost = 5x the profit. $70 million in their pocket. They also sent $40,000 bills to the survivors to connect. They probably caused the fire. Pick the priciest fix. Profit off the rebuild. Bill the victims. That's the system.
