@RachelMoiselle If I recall correctly, we had The Hobbit assigned to us during the first year of high school, so 13 at the time. But several of my friends and I had all read LOTR by 10 or 11. Mostly due to us having started playing D&D already.

This is just tragic.
I started to read The Lord of the Rings (the adult sequel) in 5th class of primary school, so that’s younger than 12. I wasn’t the only one in the class to do so and I remember the only parts I struggled with were the appendices (and to a lesser extent The Council of Elrond chapter).
I remember we collectively read The Hobbit years before in 3rd class and it was very readable for us at 8/9 years old. I went to a public primary school, not an expensive one with unusually high standards.

Someone once told me that The Hobbit is too difficult a book for a child of twelve to read. The Hobbit, famously a children’s book. Fewer and fewer people are able to read in part because we continue to lower expectations. Kids in the 1940s were reading Defoe & Dickens.

As for my accent…admittedly I’ve heard for many years that my Irish accent is softer than the norm.
I have a soft voice in any case, but also my grandmother was in theatre during the ‘Golden Age’ and always maintained something of a transatlantic accent. I adored her and spent a lot of time with her (including working with her in casting as an adult) and I suppose that’s why my accent is more neutral than average for a Dubliner. It’s not affected on my end. As proof, here is a video of me during Covid, back when I was working for a disability not-for-profit.

Exactly. Every time I see people whinge about being interrogated at Ben Gurion I just roll my eyes. This is just how Ben Gurion is…suck it up or don’t visit Israel.
I was equally heavily interrogated on the way back from Israel. Indeed, a family friend warned me that it was to be expected because I was a young woman travelling alone and thus profiled as high risk because of the Hindawi affair.
For those who don’t know about this: in 1986, a five-month pregnant Irish woman Anne-Marie Murphy was found with explosives in her bag by Israeli security while trying to board an El Al flight to Tel Aviv with 374 other passengers.
It wasn’t her fault. She had been given the bag by her Jordanian fiancé, Nezar Hindawi, without knowing the contents. He sent her on the flight under the false premise of ‘meeting his parents before marriage’. His hatred of Jews surpassed any affection he may have had for his partner and unborn child who would, of course, have equally perished had his terror plot been successful.
Because of poor, naïve Anne-Marie Murphy, if you are travelling to Israel as a young woman alone today, it is highly likely you will be heavily interrogated. And you’re just going to have to get a grip and suck it up, because it’s for the purposes of keeping people safe.

Girl I got detained at the airport once and I'm Jewish and have family in Israel. Like I fear this is standard procedure where they randomly pick people to interrogate in a country so often struck by terrorism & espionage. Get a grip and grow up.

@estherzelda0514 The game started out as single player, then they pivoted to making it a live service game. Then they switched back to single player. Development was an utter mess. Jason Schreier wrote a very in depth article about it.
But yeah, end result was…not optimal.

I finally finished Dragon Age Veilguard. The problem with the game is not woke. Dragon Age has always been woke. It's actually enshittification. This game was obviously stuck in development hell and then attempted to appeal to a wide audience that didn't exist, becoming soulless.

After much contemplation this morning, I have decided to disclose something I really wanted to keep private.
Last year I made the decision to convert to Judaism, @LucBernard was one of the first people I spoke to about it in January 2024. I also told my PhD supervisor around that time.
I had contemplated this for some time prior to October 7th. For many years I had been getting in touch with my Jewish heritage. I dated a Jewish American man, who is still a dear friend, in 2022. My love for him increased in me a love for Judaism also.
On October 7th it was clear to me who my family were, it was the Jewish people. The decision to convert was made on that day, even though I did not consciously know it.
I am crying as I write this. This was not how I wished to disclose. I wanted to have practically made more steps along with my conversion. I also wanted it to be wider known amongst my extended family. I have thoughtful drafts in my notes app that are a homage to my happy Catholic upbringing, to ensure least hurt caused.
However, the anxiety of Irish people, most heartbreakingly fellow Irish women, consistently ripping apart my identity is just too much. It just keeps happening. So I want to set the record straight once and for all.
I regret that this is how I have had to announce this joyful news. But it is still joyful nonetheless. The Jewish people have welcomed me with open arms, it will be the privilege of my life to become part of the tribe.

If I had weaponised my Jewish heritage against the Jewish community and used it in order to publicly demonise Israel, no Irish person would deny me that identity. No. I would be celebrated as an authority on the subject. I would be endlessly tokenised, platformed at events and in the media. Irish people would point to the words that I say, as a woman of Jewish heritage, and cynically use them as a shield for their bigotry against Jews at large. The sole reason that Irish people strip me of any claim to my Jewish heritage is because I committed the cardinal sin of invoking it in order to help, rather than hurt, the Jewish community. Suddenly Irish people become Halacha experts and I have no right to talk about my paternal Jewish ancestors or that part of my history. They try their utmost to intimidate me into silence about it, to force me to hide that aspect of my being. Well I won’t be silent and I won’t hide.
