He started his career at IBM's Almaden Research Center. Moved to Tavant Technologies. In 2007, he co-founded his own startup, Viralizr, as CTO. In 2008, he joined Facebook as Vice President of Engineering and spent over a decade building large-scale engineering systems. In April 2023, he joined OpenAI. At that time, the Applied Engineering team had 40 people sitting on a single floor. He built it into the team that launched and scaled ChatGPT and the developer API platform. Products that grew faster than almost anything in the history of technology. In September 2025, he was elevated to CTO of B2B Applications at OpenAI. On April 17, 2026, he announced he was leaving. He said this to his team. The last three years have been an incredible journey that felt more like ten. You built some of the fastest-growing products in history without any established playbook. India's flagship battery manufacturing scheme was launched 4 years ago. Target: 50 GWh of domestic lithium-ion cell capacity. Delivered as of 2025: 1.4 GWh. That is 2.8% of the target. All of it by one company, Ola Electric. The same company has now scaled back its own capacity plan from 20 GWh to 5 GWh. Meanwhile, EV sales in India just crossed 24.5 lakh units in FY26. This is the biggest contradiction in Indian manufacturing right now. Let me explain what it means for where the real money is being made. The demand side is not the issue. Two structural engines are pulling lithium demand at the same time. 🔹 EVs: FY26 electric passenger vehicle sales surged 83.6% to 1.99 lakh units. EV share in passenger vehicles moved from 2.6% to 4.2% in twelve months. Electric commercial vehicle sales more than doubled to 19,454 units. Two wheelers crossed 14 lakh. Three wheelers hit 60.9% EV penetration. 🔹 Grid storage: The Central Electricity Authority estimates BESS requirement of 411 GWh by 2032. In 2025 alone, India tendered 17 GW / 48 GWh of standalone battery storage. Adani is commissioning the world's largest single-location BESS (3,530 MWh) in Gujarat next month. Put together, India's lithium-ion demand is projected to grow from around 40 GWh today to 210 GWh by 2030. Now the supply side. This is where the story breaks. The Advanced Chemistry Cell PLI scheme was approved in 2021 with a Rs 18,100 crore outlay. 50 GWh of domestic cell capacity was to be commissioned by 2025. Four years later, the scorecard: 🔹 Ola Electric: 20 GWh awarded → 5 GWh now targeted by FY29 🔹 Reliance New Energy: 5 GWh round 1 (delayed), 10 GWh round 2 (on track) 🔹 Incentive disbursement against Rs 2,900 crore target: zero, as of October 2025 The Ministry of Heavy Industries has since issued show cause notices and is considering relaxing the localisation rules. Why did this happen? Four reasons that are not going away. 1. India imports close to 100% of its lithium-ion cells. Nearly 70% of lithium imports come from China, which controls 85% of global battery cell manufacturing. 2. Cell manufacturing equipment is also Chinese. In April 2026, Bloomberg reported that Reliance sent hundreds of executives to Wuxi and other Chinese cities to arrange $1.1 billion worth of equipment exports for its battery plant. India cannot build cells at scale without Chinese machinery. 3. India's critical mineral imports in FY24 surged 921% for lithium, 137% for nickel, 85% for cobalt. The upstream is fully foreign. 4. The two Indian companies with actual battery manufacturing experience, Exide and Amara Raja, did not qualify under ACC PLI. The evaluation framework rewarded new entrants with higher promised domestic value addition, not execution capability. Here is the important part. If you track the actual action, not the scheme, a different map emerges. The meaningful capacity in India is being built outside the PLI scheme. 🔹 Tata Agratas is constructing a 20 GWh plant in Sanand, Gujarat. First cells expected by 2027. This is not an ACC PLI award. Tata is funding it directly. 🔹 Exide Industries is building a 12 GWh lithium plant in Karnataka with SVOLT Energy, outside PLI. 🔹 Amara Raja Energy and Mobility is setting up a 16 GWh plant in Telangana, outside PLI. The cell layer is expensive, capital intensive, dependent on imported machinery, and structurally low margin unless scaled hugely. This is why the biggest Indian private balance sheets are doing it, and why smaller players cannot. The investable thesis sits one layer up, and one layer down. One layer up: Battery materials. Roughly 35 to 55% of a battery's cost sits in cathodes and anodes, not in cell assembly. India has almost no domestic capacity here, which means every new GWh commissioned creates anchor demand for whoever cracks material scale first. 🔹 Himadri Speciality Chemical: Rs 4,800 crore LFP cathode active material plant in Odisha. Total planned capacity 200,000 MT, supporting 100 GWh of LiB demand by 2030. Phase 1 of 40,000 MT scheduled to commission in 27 to 36 months. Already invested in Australian anode technology through Sicona. 🔹 HEG: Rs 1,000 crore graphite anode plant through subsidiary TACC. Phase 1 capacity of 20,000 TPA. Designed to feed 10 to 12 GWh of cell manufacturing. 🔹 Graphite India: graphite capacity, anode development, legacy carbon chemistry base. 🔹 Neogen Chemicals: lithium salts and electrolyte additives. One of the few Indian listed names in specialty battery chemistry. 🔹 Gujarat Fluorochemicals: LiPF6 electrolyte salt, battery grade fluoropolymers. Specialty fluorine chemistry is among the highest-barrier pieces of the battery stack. One layer down: Grid-scale storage operators. BESS revenue is capex heavy but regulated and contracted. Revenue visibility here is multi-year. And tenders are already translating into signed PPAs. 🔹 JSW Energy: Storage portfolio at 29.3 GWh (2.9 GWh battery + 26.4 GWh pumped hydro). Target of 40 GWh by 2030. Signed a 1.5 GW / 12 GWh pumped storage PPA with UPPCL at Rs 77.2 lakh per MW per year. 🔹 Tata Power: 120 MWh BESS signed with NHPC in Kerala, integrated with the Mumbai distribution and solar portfolio. 🔹 Adani Green / Adani Power: 3,530 MWh single-site BESS commissioning March 2026, among the largest in the world. 🔹 NTPC: 2,500 MW / 10,000 MWh standalone BESS tender floated, 4.7 GWh investment of Rs 58 billion committed. 🔹 Exide and Amara Raja: pack assembly and BESS integration on top of the lithium capex already mentioned. 🔹 HBL Engineering: industrial and strategic batteries including nuclear, defence, and railway Kavach. The OEMs will continue to get the headlines: Tata, Mahindra, Ola, Bajaj, TVS, Hero, Ather. That is where unit sales are growing fastest. It is also where competitive intensity is highest and margins compress first. The materials layer is where the next decade of durable pricing power will sit. The storage layer is where the cash flows will compound. The cell layer in between, the one that got all the PLI attention, is the hardest business to be in and the one where Indian companies remain most dependent on China. Two takeaways worth holding on to. First, India's battery ambition has survived the failure of its flagship manufacturing scheme. Demand is rising regardless. Capital is finding its way outside the PLI. That is a bigger tailwind than the scheme itself ever was. Second, the consensus trade is OEMs. The real trade is above and below them. Batteries are no longer a car component. They are infrastructure.

आप जिस महिला को इस चित्र में देख रहे हैं उनका नाम आफरीन अली है। विवाह पूर्व इनका नाम अपरूपा पोद्दार था और इनका जन्म एक हिन्दू SC परिवार में हुआ था। पर 2007 में रिशड़ा से TMC councillor मोहम्मद शाकिर अली से विवाह के बाद इन्होंने अपना धर्म परिवर्तन कर इस्लाम अपना लिया और अपना नाम भी बदल कर आफरीन अली कर लिया था (IANS की रिपोर्ट में यह बात प्रकाशित हुई थी और यह रिपोर्ट अभी भी ऑनलाइन उपलब्ध है)। पर 2014 के लोकसभा चुनावों में ममता बनर्जी ने इन्हें आरामबाग (SC) सीट से तृणमूल कांग्रेस का प्रत्याशी बना दिया। अपरूपा पोद्दार ने चुनाव में दोनों नामों का प्रयोग किया - Aparoopa Poddar aka Afrin Ali. लक्ष्य था सीट के 30% SC वोट और 17% मुस्लिम वोटों को साधना। अपरूपा पोद्दार 54.94% वोटों के साथ इस क्षेत्र से लोकसभा सांसद निर्वाचित हुईं। उस समय यह एक बड़े विवाद का विषय बन गया और सी.पी.एम. सहित विपक्षी दलों ने इसके खिलाफ शिकायत भी दर्ज करवाई, क्योंकि संविधान के अनुसार अनुसूचित जाति से आने वाला कोई भी व्यक्ति यदि इस्लाम या क्रिश्चियनिटी अपना लेता है तो उसे SC नहीं माना जायेगा और जो सुविधायें SC जातियों के लोगों को मिलती हैं, वो सुविधायें उसे मिलनी बंद हो जायेंगी। तब अपरूपा पोद्दार इस बात से साफ मुकर गईं कि उन्होंने विवाह के बाद इस्लाम अपना लिया है। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्होंने सिर्फ अपना नाम बदल कर आफरीन अली किया है, धर्म नहीं बदला। है न कमाल की बात! कभी सुना है आपने ऐसा कि शादी के बाद किसी महिला ने धर्म परिवर्तित नहीं किया पर नाम मुसलमानों वाला रख लिया? इस तरह की धांधली सिर्फ ममता बनर्जी की तृणमूल कांग्रेस ही कर सकती है। आज यह बात मैंने यह बताने के लिए रखी कि किस तरह इस्लाम और क्रिश्चियनिटी को अपना चुके लोग हिन्दू SC समुदाय के लोगों का हक़ मार रहे हैं।
