Stumbled upon this quote recently which really resonated and epitomized the often helpless feelings us scientists have when investigating the natural world, particularly in our modern society today. images.app.goo.gl/Arbi4wsM5KA6Sk…

Got the PhD submitted today 🐟🙏 Below are photos at day 1 of the journey and today, the final shebang. Yes yes, you’d hope there’s some real strong correlation between hair growth and knowledge gain here 😂

Exciting times ahead as the Caribbean's newest otolith lab is batch processing its first couple hundred samples in the Turks and Caicos Islands, in partnership with @TCIG_Press & Fish Ageing Services Ltd, funded through Darwin Plus. Watch this space! @UKBCFs @JNCC_UK @Krusic_KG

Today's Caribbean fish is the French Grunt (Haemulon flavolineatum). The two here are competing for ranking in their group. This photo is great to see why the genus got the name "Haemulon", it comes from the Greek haimaleos = bloody in reference to the color inside their mouth.

Client satisfaction vs Ecological integrity Knowledge vs Implementation of best practices Some fascinating insights into the importance and overall potential of these recreational fishing role-models. Well done to @MattWFarthing and co-authors. doi.org/10.1016/j.fish…

Congratulations to the authors of another very interesting paper entitled "Are recreational fishing guides role models for their clients?" "...to develop fishing guides into effective “agents of change” in the global social movement of recreational angler self-reform."

This is an ocean dwelling ribbon worm from the genus Gorgonorhynchus What you can see being discharged is a sticky proboscis, this densely branching structure is a feeding appendage used in hunting.

Primary findings: Air exposure time should be reduced to below 75 s, and ideally to 10 s to minimise the physiological stress response, reflex impairment and short-term survival of A. japonicus following C&R angling. Congratulations to these authors! authors.elsevier.com/c/1f64rbiU1vYC4

@MattWFarthing Again, as the photo opportunities vary according to fishery, so will the anglers and their willingness to forego. For tourism based stuff I think it is a hard sell. Perhaps solutions like large water-filled containers may provide options. Room for innovation for sure!

@Ed_Butler_Fish 100% agree & photos will always be valued by rec anglers. Best pic practices do reduce air exposure (NB!), but I wonder about when best alternatives are impossible (e.g. big surf or croc infested water). Can we ever get rec anglers to forego that valuable pic for the fish's sake?

Given that photos of memorable catches are so important to the angling community - do you think we could ever move away from the classic "grip-n-grin" pose?

@MattWFarthing Photography will always play a role in rec angling for a vast maj. of anglers. There are already super innovative ways around the problem. However, there are barriers too! Like fishery (nt always easy/possible to photo in water) and financial limitations (camera cases). RnD gap?

In world where recreational resource users are being increasingly scrutinised - perhaps we as recreational anglers should be putting our best foot forward in the public space, not only to avoid public scrutiny, but also to set a positive example within our own networks...
