I don’t want your “best movie ever.” I want the one that made you sit in silence when the credits rolled. The one where you said, “what… was that?” No spoilers. Just titles. Let’s ruin my week.

@cota12 There's a lot of shared history between Glasgow and Japan: many of Japan's early battleships were built on the Clyde, and their engineers were trained in Glasgow shipyards from the Meiji period onwards.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is what we mean by reader literalism: UK author: the lumbering bloodhound stumbled to the top of the stairs, sniffing as he swallowed another mouthful of rum, his eyes rolling around for her in the dark. UK reader: he’s an ugly, drunk man hunting for a woman US reader: why is a dog drinking rum? It’s NOT about intelligence. It’s about how different audiences are trained to read metaphor, exaggeration, and implication. If you’re writing for a US audience, you tend to dial the metaphor back.

Undeclared war still warrants treatment of captives per the Geneva Convention. Let's hope Iran follows that convention unlike the US killing survivors at sea.

@Megatron_ron That's rich coming from the country that torpedoed an unarmed ship full of sea cadets in international waters and then left the survivors to die.

JUST IN: 🇺🇸🇮🇷 US Senator is asking Iran to treat the American pilot according to humanitarian laws despite US bombing civilian infrastructure: “The message I wanted to convey here is that if this second pilot is not rescued, he should be treated in accordance with international humanitarian laws regarding prisoners. Many argue that the US actions to attack Iran's civilian infrastructure are a violation of international law. If Iran shows that if it captures this pilot, it will follow international humanitarian law, it will be a very strong message that we must always follow the rules, especially when it comes to survivors of attacks like this.”

@Meyer_HM @DannyDrinksWine Great soundtrack as well, but Peter Fonda coolly saying "It'll work" about that horrible desert commune still irritates me.

Paul Schrader on why American liberals & leftists overlooked the drawbacks of the superficial "Easy Rider" (1969): "'Easy Rider' (1969) is a very important movie — and it is a very bad one, and I don’t think its importance should be used to obscure the gross mismanagement of its subject-matter. Dennis Hopper’s film about two drug- culture motorcyclists (Hopper and Peter Fonda) who, in the words of the Easy Rider ad, ‘set out to discover America’, has captured the imagination of the above- and underground press alike. The underground identification was instant and understandable. 'Easy Rider' fuelled the paranoia which is the staple item of the youth culture (often rightly so). As a friend said, ‘It’s a picture that doesn’t cop out,’ presumably meaning that the young idealists are senselessly massacred and the audience is left without hope. The reservations of the Life and Newsweek reviewers were overridden by their eagerness to agree with the film’s propositions. As Joseph Morgenstern wrote, ‘Easy Rider’s essential truth is brought home by what we ourselves know of our trigger-happy, hate-ridden nation in which increasing numbers of morons bear increasing numbers of arms.’ The mass media, having exploited every other youth truth, was now usurping youth’s paranoia. My complaint is that 'Easy Rider', for all its good intentions, functions in the same superficial manner ‘liberal’ Hollywood films have always functioned. Easy Rider’s superficial characterizations and slick insights stem from the same soft-headed mentality which produced such anathema ‘liberal’ films as Elia Kazan’s 'Gentleman’s Agreement' (1947) and Stanley Kramer’s 'Defiant Ones' (1958). But because liberals and leftists of all varieties so desperately need the strong statement 'Easy Rider' makes, they are willing to overlook the film’s shallow, conventional method of argument." [Excerpt from Paul Schrader's review of 'Easy Rider' (1969) in Los Angeles Free Press, 1969] Paul Schrader was fired from the paper because of this review.
