Another milestone: many congratulations to Jan Markert (@TrierUni) for the publication of his monumental study of Wilhelm I (@dg_history), which forever shatters the idea that Bismarck orchestrated German unification. Two monographs out, one more to go - my own!

Early reviews of Merkel’s memoirs that criticized the lack of regrets or revelations seem to me to miss the point of what purpose politicians’ autobiographies serve to them and Merkel’s book should be read from this perspective as well.

My copy of Angela Merkel’s memoirs has arrived. And with my political biography of Wilhelm I forthcoming, work on my next book project, a new history of Germany’s Kanzlerdemokratie, is well underway, so these memoirs could not have arrived at a better time!
