NEW: A flower bed has been installed in front of Six Flags Great America’s Columbia Carousel. It also appears there will be fountains coming to the reflection pond. @SFGreat_America will celebrate its 50th anniversary on May 29th.

In the summer of 1979, the upstart American Coaster Enthusiasts organization was still finding its footing when it brought Coaster Con II to Kings Island. At the center of the excitement was a mysterious new wooden roller coaster called The Beast. Fresh off its April debut, The Beast had already created a buzz unlike anything the coaster world had seen. Four ACE Executive Committee members rode it before opening and declared it “unequivocally one of the best new coasters to appear in many years.” For coaster fans in 1979, that was all the invitation they needed. Held June 15-17 at the Marriott Inn just north of Cincinnati, Coaster Con II offered something that now feels wonderfully nostalgic: exclusive nighttime rides on The Beast, seminars about coaster models and history, hotel suite gatherings, and a community of enthusiasts bonding over their shared passion long before social media connected fans instantly. The convention opened with a “Howdy Party” at Kings Island, where attendees experienced the park beautifully illuminated at night before climbing aboard The Beast in complete darkness — an experience that would become legendary among coaster enthusiasts. The next morning featured exclusive ride time on The Beast, followed Sunday by exclusive rides on The Racer, another iconic Kings Island attraction. Reading through the original convention details today feels like opening a time capsule from the early days of organized coaster enthusiasm. Hotel rooms at the Marriott Inn cost $36 for singles and $46 for doubles. Registration was just $8 in advance for ACE members. Guests arriving at the Cincinnati airport could take a limousine shuttle every 40 minutes for $7.50 one way. But beyond the prices and logistics, Coaster Con II represented something bigger. It captured a moment when roller coaster fandom was beginning to evolve into a true community. Fans traveled across the country not for media events, but for the simple joy of riding great coasters and connecting with others who shared the same passion. More than four decades later, The Beast still roars through the woods at Kings Island, and ACE conventions continue bringing enthusiasts together. But Coaster Con II remains a snapshot of a simpler era — when coaster clubs were built through mailed newsletters, hotel ballroom presentations, and late-night conversations in convention suites after marathon rides on legendary coasters.

@ThrillingMoment I have the same itin scrapbooked from 2003. Dragster was being Dragster and it wasn't open. Lucky the event happened at all considering it was right after Stark Raven Mad.
