@AlfredAlfer77 You know, this is a Story is all too familiar with universities and how somehow magically they get surrounded by black occupied neighborhoods. I at this point do believe that it was extremely intentional.

Gee I wonder why no one wants to attend my Alma Mater, a college smack dab in the middle of the N. Philly hood where if you walk a few blocks in the wrong direction off campus you get assaulted by roving gangs of Blacks and if you address the issue publicly you get kicked out. 🤔

@CathyYoung63 I've noticed an interesting and robust correlation, that my Trumpist friends on FB are the ones posting videos to make a point while my non-Trumpist friends post links to articles from written sources like the NYT or the Atlantic.

Yes, exactly. When people tell me to watch a 1- or 2-hour video on some topic? You've got to be kidding. (Unless it's a topic that really does call for video or film. And the video or film is well-made.)
Felix ❤️‍🔥@pilgoth

I hate, hate, hate being forced to watch a video to learn something when I could read at 10x the speed. Videos are for cattle. "Hey guys, today we'll be talking about X -- X is a fascinating topic, and a lot of you have been requesting I talk about X, so..." - Shut up, Shut up!

@6abc Dishonest headline and spin. First, SEPTA does not run around-the-clock. Kids DO have access to transit whenever it's running, just not for free. You want it to always be free (i.e. paid for by other riders). Say what you mean.

Good thread, and something we talk about often. We basically have a suspense date (year) when our family will look to the suburbs so we can let our then 7-8 year old go out and be a kid. I live in one of the nicer neighborhoods in the city. But the problems with Philly, and cities more broadly, is that QoL issues - deranged homeless addicts (especially on transit), off leash dogs (pitbulls), bands of dirtbikes, etc - are either off limits or very very low on the list of enforcement. And I shouldn't forget the complete lack of enforcement against juvenile criminals, even violent ones, adding another edge of real danger to kids growing up here. Overtly antisocial behavior makes what should be an awesome place to grow up, with access to so much, almost completely untenable.

I really enjoy Murray's writing on parents, and this hits home for me. My eldest is 7, an age where she's craving more independence. I live in an area where it is easier than 98% of America to give it to her, but there are still so many things I just can't let her do.

Many city parks depts view “commerce” in parks negatively. No one can adequately explain why, but it’s reality. It’s also self-defeating as it creates a revenue source & drives higher usage. Unfortunately many parks dept heads measure success by acres owned, not visitors per acre. More cities need to adopt the kiosk strategy of Lisbon and elsewhere.

American city parks have a SERIOUS deficiency of vendors selling tasty treats, so it's cool to see a new place popping up in Central Park to grab a pastry and a coffee.

@grantgager @dmtrubman Who's suggesting that people should pay to play in the park? We're talking about ice cream. You have to pay for that whether it's sold in a store or in a park. Are you saying people should not have the right to buy and sell treats in a park?

@dmtrubman respectfully, the commercialization of public spaces can create barriers, perceived and/or real, to accessibility (eg. a need to pay to play, especially with kids in tow) Other funding mechanisms don’t carry that burden.

American city parks are seriously under commercialized: It shouldn't be so rare to see a vendor selling ice cream in the park on a beautiful spring Saturday.

These “gang takedowns” that send dozens of young Black men to prison without changing any of the underlying factors that result in young people joining gangs don’t work. The cops and DAs just periodically arrest a new bunch of people, but nothing really changes.
Jessica S. Tisch@NYPDPC

These 36 gang members were some of the most violent criminals in New York City, who terrorized Brownsville for years. Thanks to the precision policing of NYPD detectives, they are finally off our streets. nbcnewyork.com/news/local/cri…

@SketchesbyBoze A trend I hear even among educated people is the assumption that any plural ending in -es is from Greek and is pronounced "EEZ", as in biasEEZ and processEEZ.

As literacy declines, the ability to have basic discussion is breaking down. I called someone on here a “naysayer”; she thought I said “nasty.” A guy yesterday tried to tell me Alexandre Dumas died 2,000 years ago. Turns out, mass literacy was the glue holding society together.
