Gee I wonder why no one wants to attend my Alma Mater, a college smack dab in the middle of the N. Philly hood where if you walk a few blocks in the wrong direction off campus you get assaulted by roving gangs of Blacks and if you address the issue publicly you get kicked out. 🤔

Good thread, and something we talk about often. We basically have a suspense date (year) when our family will look to the suburbs so we can let our then 7-8 year old go out and be a kid.
I live in one of the nicer neighborhoods in the city. But the problems with Philly, and cities more broadly, is that QoL issues - deranged homeless addicts (especially on transit), off leash dogs (pitbulls), bands of dirtbikes, etc - are either off limits or very very low on the list of enforcement. And I shouldn't forget the complete lack of enforcement against juvenile criminals, even violent ones, adding another edge of real danger to kids growing up here.
Overtly antisocial behavior makes what should be an awesome place to grow up, with access to so much, almost completely untenable.

Many city parks depts view “commerce” in parks negatively. No one can adequately explain why, but it’s reality. It’s also self-defeating as it creates a revenue source & drives higher usage.
Unfortunately many parks dept heads measure success by acres owned, not visitors per acre. More cities need to adopt the kiosk strategy of Lisbon and elsewhere.
