Functional trait datasets: 1) help overcome some challenges of studying biotic interactions, 2) allow us to study the ecological & evolutionary effects of biotic interactions across scales, & 3) enhance predictive models of future reef #fish distributions & evolvability. 3/3

Biotic interactions can influence how populations respond to #climatechange by affecting their ability to displace to new areas and adapt to new conditions. But many of the predicted effects of biotic interactions remain untested! 2/3 #ecology #Evolution

Our findings suggest there's much more to discover about the ecology & evolution of fishes by looking beyond the commonly used length metrics.

Body size affects many other aspects of an organism's biology & ecology. As such, it's one of the most commonly studied traits. In this paper led by @alencarlrv, we describe how body size has evolved in complex ways across 42 orders of teleost fishes. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Chaetodon nigropunctatus, the black-spotted or Oman butterflyfish. Some find this fish ugly and dull but I say nay. It’s so subtle and sleek.
