Native American reservations operate in much the same way, with clearly defined borders. Once those borders exist, jurisdiction changes. Are reservations racist?
Reservations can issue what’s called an exclusion, which permanently bans an individual from entering that reservation. If the most direct route between two places passes through reservation land and you have an exclusion, you must either obtain permission or take a significantly longer route—sometimes 50 miles instead of five.
An exclusion can even prevent someone from attending a family member’s funeral if it’s held on the reservation. Entering without permission can result in arrest.
In effect, a Native person can be permanently removed from the reservation even if they own land on it.
How many immigrants have reservations taken in—providing land, housing, employment, healthcare, food, or schooling? The answer appears to be none.
