Ecologists seek to understand how spp distributions relate to environmental factors, but often relationships are radically human-altered. Our new @JVegSci paper uses historical data in niche models to understand presettlement distributions of forest trees. doi.org/10.1111/jvs.70…

Biodiversity loss is not only about extinctions It is also the degradation of ecosystems - supporting a few generalist species, with reduced food webs, & looking the same wherever you go As seen over much of the UK

My first ever opinion piece for the @guardian! In it, I delve into the Wood Wide Web, the rise of scientific myths (including the Great Wood of Caledon), and why we should not fear difficult ideas. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

“We soon learned that far greater threat to the land lay in road-building than in logging the timber.” For the latest @SmithsonianMag, I wrote about the history of public lands road construction and the movement to unmake our infrastructure. #roadecology smithsonianmag.com/science-nature…

My first research experience was in a herbarium @williamandmary. In fact, I got to visit and exchange specimens with many herbaria for that project. I got drawn in to the potential to study ecological history via collections and never looked back.
