Let’s consider how the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework intersects with serving multilingual learners. #UDL (CAST, 2016) is a powerful instructional framework commonly used in special education to design equitable learning environments for ALL learners. 3 core principles guide the planning process & lesson delivery: 1. ENGAGE 2. REPRESENT 3. EXPRESS UDL can support & benefit MLs because it pushes us to become intentional about providing choice, connecting with students backgrounds and prior knowledge or experiences, forming goals, embedding multimodal forms of representation & increasing ways learners respond.
