On Easter Monday 1916, my grandparents along with many other brave Irish volunteers went out and put their lives on the line to establish an Irish Republic. It was on Talbot Street my grandmother would tend to the wounds of Paddy Mahon, who would later introduce her to my grandfather and subsequently become the best man at their wedding. They would go on to defend the Republic in both the War of Independence and the Counter Revolution. Their home would become the headquarters of the Dublin Brigade IRA from 1918 until the mid 1980s. Today we remember them with pride along with the countless other volunteers who risked their lives and in some cases gave their lives in the pursuit of Irish freedom. I would invite and encourage others to post their own family or related photos and stories from this period, so we may never forget this historical time, when our modern ancestors stood up for Irish freedom as we do today. malachy.ie
