Smith was extremely run heavy in 4 of his prior 5 seasons as a playcaller, but called a balanced offense in 1 season with Matt Ryan (Kyle Pitts' big rookie year). It will be interesting to see who the Steelers land on at QB. They need to aim higher than Pickett/Rudolph or it's going to be one of the league's run heaviest offenses.

This is going to make it very hard to get excited about George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, and Pat Freiermuth. I’ll be very curious to see where their ADPs land.

The #Steelers are expected to hire former #Falcons coach Arthur Smith as their offensive coordinator, per sources. Smith had a top run game as #Titans OC before heading to Atlanta three years ago. Now he’ll be coaching Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and company in Pittsburgh.

@CubsZone @sahadevsharma I don’t want to be the wet blanket but what’s the difference in Busch’s season last year and mervis’ PCL season the year before he came up? Almost the same age too

“The expectation is that Busch will enter spring training as the team’s primary first baseman with a chance to move around the diamond,” per @sahadevsharma.

This is one of the most outta nowhere trades for the Cubs in recent memory. I am just stunned right now. A little bit giddy, though.

Just listened to the stream to confirm this and Bowden was unequivocal when he said this. That the Cubs have made "significant offers" to Cody Bellinger, Jordan Montgomery, Matt Chapman, and Rhys Hoskins. No confusion in the statement. Can probably play with the meaning of the words "significant" and "offer," because it'd surprise me A LOT to learn that the Cubs have huge offers out there and acceptable (as in, available to be accepted today) by all four of those players at this moment.
FullCountTommy@FullCountTommy

Hidden later in the Bowden interview (not in this clip). Caveats abound, but... “They’re involved and have made significant offers to Montgomery, Bellinger, Chapman and Hoskins”

@BleacherNation Man, all the hemming and hawing breaking down the intricacies of our 3rd catcher options is sad. You’re prob.right about the how’s & why’s but damn that’s sad it’s come to this. It’s the same thing every year since we started this crap with Kris Bryant & the service time games

@MLBFiles @Michael_Cerami @BleacherNation I will say I’m curious if he’s been given a hard budget by ownership and he’s just being used as an expensive meat shield for ownership not to take the heat for stinking the last few years? That would be a crappy job and I hope it pays well

Let's see if I can thread the needle to make this point without getting shredded by all kinds of different groups ... I see a lot of "JED SUCKS!' in the timeline every time a Cubs rumor or other-team signing comes out. I am also frustrated by the lack of movement this offseason thus far. Very frustrated. Increasingly concerned, even. But I do think it's worth keeping in mind that the Cubs under Hoyer built up one of the best 2/3 farm systems in baseball, developed a front office worthy of getting poached, decisively pounced on the best manager in baseball, and constructed a 2023 roster that wound up a lot better than many were predicting back in March. Is he perfect? Of course not. Those depth moves last year were a disaster. The desire to land a perfect deal sometimes stands in the way of getting an acceptable deal. So on and so forth. I'd imagine he would tell you he's got blind spots, like everyone does. On the balance, though, I think it's only fair to point out the good stuff FROM TIME TO TIME, even as we otherwise make our jokes about back-up catchers and grit our teeth about moves not made.

@Michael_Cerami @BleacherNation We dont even sell off well at the deadlines…. As far as the prospects go a blind squirrel…. This is a stupidly long rebuild for a team that should be reloading generally.

Agreed with all of the above. So this is more of an “and” than a “but” 2023 ended up exactly like a lot of us thought precisely because he came up just short last offseason. Maybe they “over achieved” or maybe he should have done better predicting that and filling out the roster.

As a fan, you want to root for a team that either (A) spends a lot or (B) wins a lot. The Cubs are technically still neither. I believe Jed is attempting to go for "Option B," and has a good idea of how to do it. But he still has to prove it.

It's funny how we never talk about Blake Snell as an option for the Cubs - it feels like people just have a sense that his deal is a landmine waiting to happen. Right or wrong, Cubs have never been mentioned in connection with him, and I don't expect them to be.

The Cubs reported interest in Matt Chapman has really only made sense to me in a world where his market just doesn’t develop, and you can get him on a deal that is too good to pass up.
Derek@derek_teusch

@BleacherNation Do you think stuff like this would change possible interest in Chapman?
