To start meteorological winter 2024-25 I have an essay in NY Times this morning highlighting the importance of NOAA and especially the National Weather Service. As my focus is numerical weather modeling, I believe it is critical for economic and national security to have world-leading capabilities across all time scales from minutes (tornado warnings), hours, days, and months or years. The new Congress in January 2025 can immediately get to work on several priorities. With every taxpayer penny under intense scrutiny, I argue that investment in NOAA is money well spent.
