Word people. You know how dendrophilia is a love of trees. What is a love of grass/grasses/prairie?

I see a wind gust to 32 mph at the airport about 20 minutes ago, but the one we just had on the west side (11:14) was probably 40 mph. Impressive. We'll see what shows up in the data. 🌬️ 🌬️

Bonkers. The French Broad River in North Carolina is currently forecasted to crest 10 feet above its previous record and the stage for 'Major flooding'.

Kid 1 said if you turn it on its side, it looks like a tree. “Well, let’s sit down and talk about fractals.”

@CinTyLeeEarth This is great. One other version: the Great Mediator paper. Take the tug-of-war scenario, but instead of taking a side, the paper says, "You're both kind of wrong and both kind of right." (just published one in this category).

I'm sure I missed some types. LOL. I ultimately prefer the constructive types of papers as those involve more creativity.

I was thinking about all the ways to describe the types of scientific papers out there. For example, there's the Tug of War paper, where the paper is framed as a tense debate with two strongly opposing sides. You come in and side with one side and become a hero for breaking the tension. Nature loves these types of papers.

Really happy to see this work come out led by my buddy Tyler Doane (now at DRI). We looked at topographic roughness (std. dev of elevation) and how it can be inverted for geomorphic process history. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20…

Woww... really impressive rock avalanche today in Vallon de Bérard (Aig. Rouges, Vallorcine)! 🔥 Seems to originate from Aig. de l'Encrenaz (2887 m) and went down to valley floor at 1700 m... 😱 Look at the size of those bouncing boulders! 🪨 Sound on ! 🔊 🎥 Stéphane Hoerner

Happy to announce that @NSF support for OpenTopography has been renewed for another four years! This is the 5th generation of funding for OT. Support comes from NSF EAR's Geoinformatics program & the National Discovery Cloud for Climate initiative. More: opentopography.org/news/opentopog…

Reminder that the vice provost for student life -- who ultimately oversees the student misconduct office & process -- was also a part of the "ad hoc committee" who originally changed the rules in the middle of the night. There are *lots* of untrustworthy people around here.

This afternoon’s storms seemed to come out of nowhere…even too fast for one bicyclist to react. Neighbors near 61st and Thurston in Milwaukee tell he ended up being okay! Courtesy: Lorenzo Parker

Very bumpy on the underside of the anvil as storms have cleared out from town. Call them mammatus if you’re feeling really generous.

I'm naïve about cyclone/hurricane dynamics - but this strikes me as a nightmare scenario for Taiwan as it hovers near the coast refueling at the same time as dumping over Taiwan!
Nahel Belgherze@WxNB_

Absolutely wild stuff is happening in the Western Pacific as Typhoon Gaemi deviated considerably south from the forecasted path due to interaction with Taiwan’s mountainous terrain, now making a counterclockwise loop just off the main island’s eastern coast.
