They are proud, Letha, and can and are American Inupiaq. Its real, as the Soviets closed the border to cross continental traffic the Eskimo used to trade back and forth with and many Inupiaq were/are on the Russian side, like Big Diomede Island, while Siberian Y'upik, who were historically of the Russian side, were cut off on American Saint Lawrence Island.

My granddaughter Avery came home this afternoon with paper to go skiing. On it they wanted some sort of ethnic answers, as to "are you...... A, Inuit B, African American C, Pacific Islander D, Indian E, Hispanic F, Asian, G, Caucasion H, Identify as ; Her first question was 'What are we? Inuit?....I though we were Inupiaq...." I told her to skip the stupid shit and wrote "American" and left it at that. Boy did she laugh.

If they had put 'inupiaq' instead of another tribes name, it would have been checked, and the kids quite proud of being an Inupiaq Eskimo, just not a part of the neighboring tribes of Inuit. No problem, most people have no idea what the various tribes names are except themselves. People telling my then 45 year old wife her identity as an Eskimo was now a dirty word, didn't go over with her well at all, then they told her to be an "Inuit' instead of 'Inupiaq" and she flipped.....then they took "Native Alaskan off the ID cards and put "Something else" lets hope they don't go chopping down totem poles because the South east AK Indians were slave owners back in the day...

@letha_jeffers Right on! Despite the bad things in the past of this as a country, its gotten better in equality's and liberty's, though nothing is perfect, there is no better place.

@HailstoneChip Be proud of your cultural heritage...you are an example of the great diversity that encompasses what it means to be an American...this country has a dark history but it is our history...I don't know my ancestors the way she does...I admire her for that.....

@SaulWright12 There a lot of us mixed race American people, so I find it to be who I am, with no shame. My list of ancestry would be long and and winding, but I was born here. Had they listed her tribal name and self identification, Inupiaq, that would have been a no brainer.

I totally agree. Besides there's so very few "pure blood' anything in this world, and this country is a melting pot. Besides the girl is a mix of many races and being raised and born here makes her Eskimo, and that's that.....all you need is some blood connection and your "in" and still an American. I am a mix of various bloods myself, and I was born in this country , so I am an American, and that, too, is that. We all have so much in common as a country and people it was weird around 2010/11 that racism made such a resurgence in the country....it s sad...

@HailstoneChip Never wore one. Ever. Walked through grocery stores, through hospital, sat in waiting room looking at everyone wearing their mask. No one said one word to me. I refused the idiocy.

I must confess here and now; During Covid, I only wore a mask 3 times, briefly, that I can remember.......
