So sad to see mass market paperbacks go extinct. There is something about the artwork, feel, and even smell of a mass market paperback that sets it apart. Many of us have such wonderful memories of tucking one into a backpack or back pocket in years past to read whenever the opportunity arose. Pictured are some of my “movie tie-ins” which were usually printed in the mass market format along with a few other novels adapted to the screen. Reading them was such an influential part of my childhood. Unfortunately, the movie tie-in has, for the most part, also vanished from shelves. My last book to be printed in the mass market format was RED SKY MOURNING. I feel fortunate that I at least got a few in before the end. If you have been to one of my book signing events you have probably heard me say that reading is now the ultimate act of defiance against digital tyranny. You want to be a rebel? Put down your phone, pick up a book, and read! For more on the history of mass market paperbacks, see the linked article. nytimes.com/2026/02/06/boo…
