As the political climate continues to shift and place new demands on leaders, one element of effective school leadership must remain steady: a clear and unwavering sense of purpose.

Bobbi Taillefer was supposed to bring much-needed transparency to the new teacher discipline system in Manitoba. But 16 months later, she's out following claims she's been working remotely in Florida over the winter. And never told the government about it. My story:

During my first year of teaching, there was a veteran teacher near my classroom with nearly thirty years of experience. She was methodical, well prepared, deeply professional, and ran a calm, well-managed classroom. One day, I watched our assistant principal—someone who hadn’t taught in a classroom for over a decade—reprimand her for the way she managed her students. I was stunned. Sadly, this wasn’t an isolated moment. It reflects a pattern that shows up far too often in education: veteran teachers being treated like children by people who haven’t run a classroom in years.

@WeinsteinEdu I would offer that one of the biggest challenges is making sure that the core purpose of schooling shapes everything we do for students.

One of the hardest parts of being an educator is the lack of downtime. You have to be on all day long. This is mentally and physically draining.

My thoughts are with the Jewish community here in Alberta and around the world more than ever this year as we mark the start of Hanukkah. On what should be a joyous day, the horrific attack that took place at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia today is an awful reminder of our duty to stand together against antisemitism, and defend our freedoms to practice religion without fear or persecution. Lighting the menorah has always been a symbol of resilience and defiance, and that light will always win out over darkness. May we find hope and healing together over the next eight nights.

Connor Hellebuyck is out for 4-6 weeks, undergoing arthroscopic injury to treat a minor, nagging knee issue. Six weeks would bring us to 2026, with enough time to prep for the Olympics. And taking time now seems necessary if the #NHLJets are to attempt a deep playoff run.
