I was recently the target of a sim swap attack, which I thankfully survived. here's what happened and how you can protect yourself: one evening i suddenly started getting spammed with hundreds of texts from random numbers, mostly just gibberish. i went through and deleted and reported them as spam. weird the next morning, it happened again. as I was looking through the spam texts, amidst them I noticed a text from my cell service provider asking me to confirm a sim swap. this text claimed that that if I didn't reject the sim swap by responding to the text, after a short period of time the sim swap would go through automatically. wtf was this real? I responded to the text saying I rejected the sim swap. then I called my service provider's customer service and asked what was going on. they looked at the records for my account, seemed confused, and asked if I had visited one of their stores today. I said no... then they said the text was real, and that just a few minutes earlier a person claiming to be me was in one of their physical stores, that an employee there had verified their identity as me, and that they were doing a sim swap. the only remaining check was this text. clearly, the attacker was hoping I'd miss the confirmation text from my service provider amidst all the spam and the sim swap would go through. the customer service agent put extra security on my account so that sim swaps would be harder to do. thankfully i prevented the sim swap. i don't actually have any crypto or important accounts accessible with SMS 2FA (no one should), but it still could have been bad Sim swap attacks are not new and unfortunately are too common in crypto. To protect yourself, I recommend - call your cell service provider and ask if there is additional security they can put on their account to prevent sim swaps - don't secure anything important with SMS 2FA - and if you start getting spammed with texts, look for what an attacker may be trying to get you to miss the end
