According to this very non-scientific poll, #ttrpg in general seems to be more popular than #DnD. However, I do see more content creators discussing D&D than any other game by far. Any thoughts why?

And don’t get me wrong, I was caught off guard the first time I saw it too. But isn’t it a little sad that this is what passes for “wow I can’t believe they did that” in Power Rangers?

This scene being shocking for Power Rangers fans is kind of the perfect summary of how painfully sanitized this show has become since RPM.

@badmanafluence You can do some bonkers shit like grab a blue-white shock with a black white fetch. Bc a lot of lands say "swamp" but tap for colors besides black For more corner cases, being able to shuffle on demand is useful. Scry 5 and all 5 suck? Crack a fetch and try again!

What are some good ways to reduce the DM's cognitive load during a game of #dnd? I'm especially interested in tasks that can be handed off to players, but all tips welcome.

It amuses me to see people argue over the Elf Games. When i first arrived on Twitter I got exposed to a lot of 5e things. Not being a 5e player, sorry I just play older games for the most part, it was different. Something I found odd was the obsession with what I call, me and my character. What is my fabricated back story. How will I evolve my character emotionally. Will the DM insert my back story into the game sessions. What I felt I was seeing was game play focused on individual fulfillment. This was very contrary to how I see a game world. I see it as the Referee creating a place for me to explore. Sure, I care about my character, yet, me in the game relates to what is being presented within the world. If my PC dies the world moves on. I roll a new PC and re-enter the process of exploration. But my PC is not integral to the world and I am part of a team via the group play. My me-ness arises from how I connect with the world and evolves within the play sessions based on what happens in the world. It's hard to explain this difference. But there is a profound difference in approach to the game. But then I played 5e. I found playing to be very similar to all other exploration RPGs i've played. Yes, I have played a lot of RPGs over the years. Perhaps more die rolls for knowing what I was discovering instead of simple GM decisions. Yet, my DMs were usually older DMs who began with early systems. They were doing what some call Sandbox play, yet, I prefer to call playing D&D, because that's how I've done it for decades. Or, a hybrid of sandbox with a lot of mini story plot threads to unravel. So is it just that people who have only played later games speak about it in terms of how they see other people talk about it? They have new terms and new language? When I run at conventions those who have never played OD&D seem astounded by the differences. Even things like having to make a map as you go causes commentary. The speed and deadliness of fights as well. No, you do not really want to fight everything. When we wrote The lost Dungeons of Tonisborg we focused on what we thought was reviving traditional play methods. The book is full of how to DM advice. It was all play technique which we felt was not being used quite as much anymore. Is there a fundamental difference between newer games with more focus on me and my me story, and older style games with more focus on us and the world story? I've been scratching my head over this because when I played 5e I played it like any other RPG I've tried. I suppose the question could be: is the game that much different, or are the newer players bringing a different style to the play? Do you see differences? #TTRPGs #RPG #DnD #dungeonsanddragons

@akinomii_art I agree with you but the matt mercer effect genie is out of the bottle. If your players are demanding and keep wanting from you something that is impossible for a normal person to deliver, get new players

CR stopped being "just a group of friends at a table" a long time ago. You can be a group of friends at a table with a super successful business. The sooner ppl realize this, the sooner things like the "Matt Mercer Effect" stops being the boogeyman of TTRPGs. Smol 🧵

@Spyco03 @jesthehuman As someone currently tinkering with writing a 5e srd cyberpunk game, I have to agree since I'm already throwing out *large* amounts of 5e and I haven't even officially started

@jesthehuman I don’t think people should NOT play dnd, I love dnd. But I saw someone make a Dnd supplement for cyberpunk and I think I got closer to the edge. I think people should realize there are systems that are tailored to what they want MORE than Dnd is.

People who scream “stop playing D&D and find an indie TTRPG alternative” are the vegans™️ of the TTRPG industry.

@XelatheBrotaku @ComradeIshmael Eh. I always knew backwards compatibility was something they'd fuck up. This is dnd. I accept I'm going to have to houserule this game to hell to get it how I want it just like I accept a Bethesda game is at its best after the modders get their hands on it

@ComradeIshmael If they'd just call it a completely new edition, I think a significant enough portion of the drama would be somewhat mitigated, but because they keep harping on backwards-compatibility with 5e, they bring a lot of the drama on themselves.

I need some DM help, I have a wild magic sorcerer in my party, but I want to do a custom wild magic table for them. Their magic is fire based, originally granted from a firey storm goddess.

@MrShickadance_ Personally what I do is I make a 3rd level character of the appropriate class and then just add stuff until it feels correct. And I'm not shy about creating "multiclasses" if it feels correct

Friendly D&D PSA: Stop making character sheets for your NPCs. I know you want to be a player, and it seems like a really simple way to generate characters, but giving NPCs character classes makes what your players do feel less special. Learn to make stat blocks for them!

I think the reason the whole "Batman is a fascist" narrative doesn't work for me is because I grew up with media that hammered in, again and again, that he is so deeply kind

I wonder if most people are aware that 5e introduced harvesting rules, including rules for selling monster hides, in Ghosts of Saltmarsh... It's there, a little hidden and presented as just another wall of text...
