As far as I know, tomorrow's 7th strike day at @Sydney_Uni makes this the (equal?) longest-running strike campaign by @NTEUnion members ever. A good opportunity to look at the background actors at the university who are making our current protracted struggle necessary. 🧵

This one brings an exhausted, contented smile. A true pandemic paper, delayed by lab shutdowns, international travel bans, and 'procrastination' in writing due to being head of teaching throughout the pandemic. But it's finally done! Congrats to Ameer and thanks to all.

@PalliThordarson @Chemjobber I don't like DCM, but ACN is worse. At least DCM abbreviates according to nomenclature guidelines: prefix, substituent, parent. ACN abbreviates only by syllable. Would anyone use MPL for morpholine? DO for dioxane?

@Chemjobber The only thing worse than ACN is DCM! I go CH2Cl2 and CH3CN when I can. Why abbreviate something so simple and transparent anyway as those two formulas?

@sjwill99 @sa_poulsen @GRIDD_GU We have a similar competitive internal UNSW wide scheme for 50-200k equipment. Our School has got all sort of things that way from H-cube, Chemical fridges and solvent purification systems to DLS, prep-HPLC and LCMS to name a few. You don't have this?

After a great week at #RACI2022 my attention is now firmly on identifying which automated flash chromatography system is best to support @GRIDD_GU chemists after retiring our workhorse system of the last 16 yrs. Appreciate recommendations (Biotage, Teledyne etc) #ozchem Please RT

@ColetteBoskovic @DeplazesEvelyne @thinknut @ChemistryNathan Shame on BCEC and similar venues really. They know they should improve air ventilation/purification, they know hand sanitiser is a cheap sham, they just don’t want to spend the money to invest in better health outcomes for their clients/customers.

@Hutton_Lab @DeplazesEvelyne @thinknut @ChemistryNathan I agree. The #RACI2022 convention centre's idea of a COVIDsafe plan was based on copious hand sanitiser. 🤯But shame on us really. As chemists we know about aerosols better than most.

@ColetteBoskovic @DeplazesEvelyne @thinknut @ChemistryNathan Absolutely! But it wont happen unless conference organisers choose venues based on their willingness to implement these mitigation strategies.

@DeplazesEvelyne @thinknut @ChemistryNathan How about a venue with ramped up ventilation, HEPA filters, CO2 monitors around for people to check, maximal use of outdoor space (eg for conference dinner) & well spread out posters? Won't mean zero COVID, but would surely be an improvement.
