Here are 10 Nigerian medical doctors known for their great surgical contributions: 1. Adelola Adeloye A pioneer neurosurgeon in Nigeria, he was one of the first to train and practice neurosurgery in the country. He co-described the rare Adeloye-Odeku disease and contributed significantly to developing neurosurgical education in Nigeria. 2. Martin Anthony Chukwubuike Aghaji A leading cardiothoracic surgeon who performed the first successful mechanical heart valve replacement surgeries in Nigeria. His work advanced heart surgery practices in the country. 3. Fabian Udekwu He led the team that carried out the first successful open-heart surgery in Nigeria in 1974, a major breakthrough in Nigeria's medical history. 4. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu The first indigenous female neurosurgeon in Nigeria and West Africa. She has performed several complex brain and spinal surgeries and is a role model in the surgical field. 5. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh Although not a surgeon, her clinical decisions and courage during the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria in 2014 saved countless lives and prevented a national epidemic. 6. Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas One of Nigeria's earliest facial reconstructive and plastic surgeons. He was instrumental in developing surgical practices in Lagos and was also the first provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. 7. Rasheed Ayobami Aranmolate A plastic and laser surgeon who brought advancements in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in Nigeria. He is known for combining technology with medicine in patient care. 8. Joseph Abiodun Balogun Though more focused on physiotherapy and research, he contributed significantly to medical education and interdisciplinary rehabilitation practices in Nigeria. 9. Yahaya Baba Adamu A cardio-thoracic surgeon who has played a major role in improving surgical services in northern Nigeria, particularly in government hospitals and teaching institutions. 10. Ngozi Okonkwo A consultant obstetrician.
