This moment is even creepier if you interpret most of Friend's appearances as them being accidentally spotted while following you in the darkness. The game recognizes there's *something* hidden in the dark watching you so it lets you target it, but it's unable to tell what it is

You know I realized that during this scene you have all the crystals and there is an exit to the Light World right outside the Cafe so if you had a Thorn Ring you could genuinely just craft the Twisted Sword right away and make Kris lay waste to all of Flower Kindgdom for this
