A cold pulse crawled up my spine. The sound of chains shifting. And all the warmth of the moment drained clean away.

The room filled with laughter again soft, sweet, human. For a heartbeat, I let myself believe we were safe. That the world outside the door wasn’t tearing itself apart. Then the house creaked. That familiar, dragging groan from the floor below.
