After nearly five years of salivating at the sight of Anthony Albanese trapped by Scott Morrison's oh-so-clever stage three tax cut wedge, the press corp suddenly finds itself caught in the vice, writes Christopher Warren. #Echobox=1707454721-1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">crikey.com.au/2024/02/06/ant…

@MolanJill @KosSamaras @DrVicFielding Can’t agree more. Virtually every news program gave coverage to Dutton or Price , who would do a press conference in which they lied, exaggerated, or misled and only took a few Q’s - usually from “friendly” media. Most journos never fact checked statements, just repeated them.

@KosSamaras Instead of always focusing on what 'yes' did wrong, why don't we talk about how 'no' used misinformation and fear to contradictorily convince people Voice had too much power, but would also do nothing, while at same time, would divide. An advisory body! accent-research.com/voice

The Yes campaign would be in a far better position if it worked with some of the best progressive campaigners in Australia. Not shutting them out. Like this man. Premier Dan Andrews begun his explanation (on the Voice) by declaring "you get better outcomes when you listen to people". "If we listen to Aboriginal people about their babies being sick, about their parents dying decades before they should, about their job opportunities, their education, about their business, about the things that they have the greatest stake in, then we will do better," he said. "Because you always do better when you listen. Beyond that, I'll just make the point, all of us as taxpayers, we're spending billions of dollars, billions of dollars every year, to fail. These programs are not working. "There's a better way, and instead of continuing with the proven unsuccessful, incredibly inefficient, costly way, which is telling Aboriginal people how it ought to be. We should do something different. We should listen to them. It's really simple for me. "That's why I'm voting yes. That's why I hope other Victorians will vote yes, because there's got to be a better way…because we're all sharing in the cost of failure in dollars, and in tragic human terms."

This is how a Parliament should work…bringing people together for rational discussions rather than divisive point scoring and mud slinging.👍

A really valuable meeting with The Voice Working Group and crossbench MPs. Great to have Indigenous leaders set out how The Voice will make a difference to people’s lives. @LindaBurneyMP @ulurustatement @fromtheheartau @SenatorDodson 👇

@mdfwalker Yes but not out of choice. They want to use their skills. Business lobby groups keep complaining about skill shortages & want a bigger migration program when what they really want is lots of cheap labour.

At end Nov22, there were 125,671 people in OZ on temp grad visas - by far highest on record. Despite larger migration program, not enough employers are offering these people skilled jobs to enable them to secure PR. Why aren't business lobby groups commenting on this?

Conversion to permanency for 19,000+ people is a common sense, humane - and transformative - change which would enable people to rebuild lives with security and belonging — and to reunite with family they’ve been separated from for a decade theage.com.au/politics/feder… @RefugeeLegal

There should be no barriers for a skilled employer sponsored temporary visa holder being sponsored for permanent residence. This bizarre idea was first developed by Peter Dutton in 2017-18 & appears to have been extended in 2019. sbs.com.au/news/article/s…

From 1700s, British FCO believed dark skin people would happily work forever picking fruit, cotton, etc at low pay & appalling conditions. In 2022, DFAT & some academics at ANU believe the same. ⁦@NationalFarmers⁩ never stopped believing. independentaustralia.net/politics/polit…

Trickle down economics was invented by conservatives in the 1980s to justify massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. It’s been nothing short of a disaster.

In 2021-22, asylum applications to AAT averaged 900 per month while decisions have averaged less than 500 per month. Without a massive injection of funding, asylum backlog at AAT will continue to grow creating a honeypot for the unscrupulous to abuse OZ asylum system.
