Jamaica Library Service

The launch marks an important step toward improving the quality, sustainability and impact of school libraries in supporting teaching and learning across the education system.

Developed by the Jamaica Library Service and adopted by the Ministry in April 2025, the standards also promote greater equity in library services, ensuring that schools can progressively build and improve their libraries through clearly defined levels of development.

The JLS School Library Standards were officially launched today at the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Library, by Dr. Kasan Troupe, Permanent Secretary in @MOEYJamaica.

At the National Jamaica Day celebration at Manchester High School, our Reading Ambassador, Brithney Clarke, connected with students and education leaders at the JLS booth before touring the Jamaica Day Village alongside the Minister of Education, @IamDanaDixon.

We also hear from our Reading Ambassador, Miss Brithney Clarke, who speaks about her national project delivered in partnership with the JLS. Read. Speak. Lead., is an initiative dedicated to empowering young people through literacy and public speaking.

Our Reading Ambassador, Miss Brithney Clarke, was on location to share in the day's activities, and presented care packages to students from three primary schools in the region—spreading kindness in action.

Miss Maureen Thompson, Director General of the JLS, noted that early exposure to technology is critical to supporting lifelong learning and advancing JLS’ mandate to bridge the digital divide.

The Jamaica Library Service, in partnership with UNESCO Regional Office for the Caribbean, officially re-opened the Children’s Computer Lab at the St. James Parish Library, marking a generous donation of US$4,000 from UNESCO to facilitate the purchase of new computers.

The computers will expand access to technology for children in the parish, creating new opportunities for learning, exploration, and the development of essential digital literacy skills.
