NASA could have completed 31 Artemis II missions around the Moon for the price it cost Gavin Newsom to build a high speed rail to nowhere. Insane.

The Citrini article reminded me of a story when I first started trading, they told me I was never going to compete with hedge funds because they "bought satellite imagery of walmart parking lots to estimate earnings" Turned out to be reasonably unhelpful. But one thing I did learn is that my CIO would go into the retail stores he was thinking of buying the debt of and monitoring who, and what kinds of people were buying. Human intelligence when investing is more underrated than ever in a world of LLMs and instant research. Go use the product you want to invest in. Go to the store. Buy the service. See it with your own eyes. Maybe not everyone should go into an active war zone, but if you want to, at least take videos

I personally don’t feel sorry for myself and try my best to not commiserate with the students or folks with established careers who find their skillset to be less relevant. I’ve seen how brutal it can be to procure a new job for both groups and wouldn’t wish that on anyone right now. It’s still true that you have to soldier on, and have to constantly learn new and relevant skills in your chosen field, otherwise you’ll be left behind quickly nowadays. I wouldn’t confuse a criticism of the current university system with “feeling sorry for myself.” My point stands that university system (in the United States at least) should either regear itself to focus on educating the youth in a way that promotes a love of country and a love of learning in general or retool to train the most elite minds, future doctors, lawyers, and engineers. It’s failing to do both right now, most colleges aren’t worth the $200k+ 4-year enrollment, much less the 4 years itself that it takes to get the degree. The fully backed gov loans are an issue because students do not have the given intellectual ability to break into a top tier career are needlessly wasting their time and money trying to do so. Or simply use the university system as a way for Mom and Dad to pay their bills while they party as hard as they can for a few years. Either way, most students don’t graduate with any love of country or love of learning, and with limited prospects of landing an “elite career.” There should still be jobs and opportunities for them once they graduate high school. Or we could make subjects like business or CS into a sort of trade, where after highschool you enroll in a program that trains you to work in a given business field or at a technology company after receiving a year or two of training. Business apprenticeships seem like the best option forward for most people of reasonable intellectual ability. Our current university system is not incentivized to treat their subjects as trades though and do nothing to ensure that low to average tier students get jobs within 6 months of graduation. Best of luck to you, I hope you can find a new job in your field or something adjacent to it. I also hope you soldier through these challenges and learn a new skills as you continue your job search.

@JamesSharp77 @charlesmurray "Albeit, feeling sorry for themselves and constantly complaining is not the answer, it’ll only make their very limited prospects worse." Then you go on to do just that.😂 Do you have any sympathy for 40 or 50+ tech workers out of work who can't get even a reduced pay job?

JUST IN: one person has been hospitalized after an assault at the Bethesda Metro station on Wisconsin Ave this afternoon. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services were called out just before 3:30pm for a serious injury (ALS-2) assault. A second person is also being evaluated on scene… otherwise information remains limited. #wmata

Not long ago @romanhelmetguy posted course offerings from Harvard today and 100 years ago, and what struck me was the near total elimination of introductory survey courses (eg "Modern Europe from 1500-1789" or "English literature from Chaucer to Shakespeare"). Instead they get highly politicized courses on very narrow subjects. So eburke here is right, but I would just add that Harvard makes little effort to provide a "common frame of reference." If the humanities courses must all be for beginners it's also because Harvard doesn't lay the groundwork for going deeper.
eburke@JamesWHankins1

Harvard students are highly intelligent and often brilliant but they have no common frame of reference, so that every class in humanities has to be for beginners. File under: Why humanities are increasingly held in contempt.
