I don't know who needs to hear this, but: A government is only afraid of an armed citizenry if said citizenry has a demonstrated successful propensity (in living memory) of taking up arms against its government. So far, the only ones who seem willing to demonstrate such are criminals. And, as you've witnessed over the past several years, the system has responded by treating them much more leniently.
