Can't help but notice you still failed to articulate how any of this was actually bad for Auburn Basketball. So you're standing on what exactly? Your original take implied that nothing good could come from Auburn accepting an invite to the NIT. That is demonstrably FALSE. This weak back pedaling to try to avoid the ire of Steven Pearl further enforces how terrible a take this was. You can't divorce the decision to play in the NIT from the man responsible for making that decision simply by saying "well I still like Steven." Huh?? The coach, players, and the fans are the main stakeholders. The program decided it was important to them and they played like it. Auburn isn't lowering the bar to NIT, it's just where they were at this year and they made the most of it. Now I do believe there was an ALL OR NOTHING dynamic to this. The only acceptable result in most Auburn fans minds was winning it all. I'd bet good money the players felt the same way. In that respect, playing in this tournament was risky in some ways. The man that's paid a lot of money to determine whether the risk is worth the reward decided to go for it and it definitely paid off. An overwhelming amount of good was accomplished by Steven Pearl taking his players wishes into consideration, accepting the invite, and ultimately winning it all. In my opinion, it says a lot about the character of the players not acting like they were too good for the NIT and WANTING to play for their coach, their school, their fans, and for the love of the game 5 more times. I have a tremendous amount of respect when folks can just admit there was a perspective they hadn't considered. The initial take had ZERO substance and was performative theatre at best. The "clarification" really only digs the hole deeper and insults the intelligence of the audience it's intended for.
