When I was living in Japan, one thing I struggled with was how hard it could be to build deep relationships.
People were often very respectful of each other’s privacy, which has its positives, but it also meant they didn’t usually ask many personal questions.
As a result, a lot of relationships stayed pretty surface-level.
Another thing I noticed was that people rarely just dropped by or casually hung out at each other’s homes. Most meetups were planned well in advance and felt more like events than spontaneous get-togethers.
Sometimes it felt like everyone was incredibly good at presenting the version of themselves they wanted the world to see, while keeping the rest hidden away.
There were a lot of things I loved about living there, but the lack of those deep, unfiltered connections was one of the hardest adjustments for me.
