When you try to tell them that certain sounds and styles heard in city pop originated from black music they get so mad

@wischls I was solely criticizing the many city Pop fans who actively ignore the black artists who were making the same style of music at the same time. It's the exact same thing with Japanese jazz fans who revere Casiopea, Takanaka and Fukui and don't engage with black artists.

@wischls I wasn't suggesting that I hated city pop, the ppl who like it, or Japanese people—I can't even believe I have to say that. I also don't believe that the black artists I listed influenced the sound of the genre...

@c000game "If you enjoy City Pop, tune into the black artists who were making that same style of music during that period." Please point out the insufferable moral soapboxing in that statement.

@Kid_Macky "How DARE you like music from that country, you should like music from MY country!" That's not "encouraging people to be more curious", that's just you being a pretentious, insufferable ass who needs to turn his musical tastes into a moral soapbox.

The City Pop phenomenon is so obviously an instance of Thing, Japan. Like, it's no coincidence that the people who are overly enthusiastic abt City Pop don't even know who Bobby Brown, Janet Jackson, or Luther Vandross are.

I’ve loved City Pop for many years now but something just feels very “off”regarding its current surge of popularity in the west. Idk I can’t fully explain but I feel like people like the idea of it more than the actual music itself

i love city pop to death but, respectfully, playing Rhythm Nation 1814 to a newgen city pop fan would be like giving a sickly victorian child a dorito and It Needs To Happen

@elischoop I wasn't even trying to conjecture abt City pop's influences or history or anything, I was just criticizing how most of the City Pop fans interact with the music now

@Kid_Macky Hot take it seems but you don’t have to know these artists just cuz you listen to the art they influenced. Its fine if you don’t. The only issue is if you try to act like they’re lesser or disregard their influence.

@douglaschu_ I was gonna include Shalamar but I was afraid not enough ppl were gonna recognize it. I've listened to Night to Remember like 100 times

@Kid_Macky If you mean in terms of what influenced the music eh not really City pop was more of a late 70s/early 80s thing while Janet and Brown are more of a 90s thing, if you mean just in terms of sound/what city pop fans like then I agree
