The culture clash here is fascinating and I think both sides have real merit depending on the specifics. The Japanese perspective treats unauthorized preservation as straight-up theft or piracy, prioritizing creators’ and publishers’ control over their IP, which is very important. The Western view sees it as safeguarding art and cultural heritage when official channels abandon it, which is also vital. I’d like to make a case for the western perspective, using music as an example instead of video games… In 1985 some of the biggest musical acts in the US and UK came together for Live Aid, a dual-venue benefit concert to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Half the show was in London, half in Philadelphia, both broadcast live. Because the event came together quickly, there simply wasn’t time to secure distribution rights for all the artists involved. So labels and organizers made a short-sighted deal: the show would air live only once, and afterward, all master tapes would be destroyed. No one realized just how historic this concert would become. Short-term financial/legal concerns won out. The concert delivered some of the most iconic moments in rock history but only for the people who saw it that day. Afterward, the US broadcasters (ABC) dutifully destroyed their tapes, exactly as promised. The UK broadcasters (BBC), however, quietly kept theirs. And thank God they did. One of the most unforgettable performances was Queen’s set, capped by Freddie Mercury at the peak of his powers and commanding the stage like no one else could. Just six years later, in 1991, Mercury died of AIDS. Without those preserved UK tapes, one of the few high-quality records of him at his absolute pinnacle would have been erased forever. Decades later, the UK’s tapes became the backbone for an official anniversary DVD set, letting new generations witness that moment. The US side? All we have are B-rolls, shaky camcorder footage, and whatever fans happened to record off their TV sets. A huge chunk of the US broadcast is just gone, lost to time because of a contract clause that prioritized legal caution over cultural legacy. And pretty much everyone involved in the decision to erase those tapes has regretted it to this day. This is exactly why the Western instinct to preserve “abandoned” art matters. When companies or rights-holders move on, whether it’s a one-off concert or a decades-old video game, they don’t always act as perfect stewards of history. Games that defined childhoods, shaped genres, or captured a moment in tech and storytelling get delisted, servers shut down, or left to rot in obsolete formats. Strict “preservation = piracy” mindset can often respect a creators wishes and yes there are plenty of cases where that is the more ethical viewpoint (Nintendo isn’t going suddenly delete every file for Super Mario Bros. 2), but it also risks letting irreplaceable pieces of our shared culture vanish the same way those US Live Aid tapes did. Preserving old games (through emulation, fan patches, or archival efforts) isn’t about denying creators their due, it’s about making sure future generations can still experience the art. Freddie Mercury’s 20 minutes at Wembley didn’t just entertain, it became legend. The same goes for the games we grew up on. If we let corporate decisions erase them completely, we’re not protecting art or artists. We’re burying them. In some cultures, that’s just what you do, and I get that, but it just doesn’t sit right with me.

There's many layers to this, which I think can make discussions confusing. In the West: * Preserving art and history for as long as humanly possible is seen as a moral principle * Games are seen as a part of art and history, and therefore worth preserving on principle * Here, it is not considered unthinkable (from a social perspective) to break rules or even laws for the sake of upholding a greater moral principle. This attitude likely comes from western history. * A game that has reached its "End-of-service" and made unavailable is considered the same as something thrown away in the trash; it is unwanted by its owner * General feelings about large corporations in the west are very negative. There's no trust relationship. Many here regard large companies as untrustworthy at best and outright demons or villains at worst. * Companies are considered separate entities from creators, and their views aren't considered representative of the original creators. I think the Japanese view on this issue is similarly multi-layered, which is why both sides feel so strongly about it.

I think what we're dealing with is a large contingent of Japanese netizens coming to terms with an alien form of capitalism far away from their own that does not in fact care about producing a good product for its consumer, and the resulting dynamics that instills.

It's weird right, cause this Nier thing is far from the first game preservation project for a Japanese title. Side7 comes to mind for Gundam Evolution, and that got literally 0 pushback from anyone. I'm hoping the Japanese people can loosen up a bit (lol like that's possible)

Where do people get these ideas? Reverse engineering is the legal method to reimplement code without violating copyright. Decompiling is prefectly legal. Not even a question. And there's no legal limit on publishing the research. Doesn't even get trade secret protections because you did your own research. The only way to limit it in the US is under a national security order. They tried that with asymmetric key encryption in the 90's and just gave up because it was impossible to enforce.

it really is shocking to see how many of our friends from JP who are just, completely allegiant to authority. i really am doing my best to respect the cultural difference here, i just wish i could understand the outright refusal to see this as anything other than "theft"
garnet !@AbstractSavior

excited about the rein private server, i think its a shining example of the love people have for this game to go through the effort to preserve it. that said its incredibly unfortunate that its likely the project will be forced to shut down because people don't know how to act

It’s so hypocritical since Square Enix have lost the source code to many of their older games like Final Fantasy Tactics and relied on these same fans that Japanese fans are criticizing. Game preservation will always be better than corporations and their “wishes”.

There's such a different response to this from Japanese fans and everyone else, most people are happy about a dead game being brought back by the community. But I've seen a bunch of Japanese fans angry about this because it goes against the wishes of Square Enix.

Never ceases to amaze me how stupid and brazen idiots on motorcycles get when they’re the most vulnerable people on the road. I’ve seen so many videos of bikers brake checking trucks on the highway and I don’t get it. I wish that Amazon driver had bowled a strike here.

@TAHK0 I'll never forget the overwhelming wave of emotions when I saw the movie in theaters, and that score and opening VO rolled, and I realized what we were in for. But I'm old enough to remember when the MSG run on Toonami was canceled thanks to 9/11. Maybe its nostalgia/age+culture?

Trump: “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.” Trump (and I guess the world) are benefiting from the complete dereliction of the media to have reported on this ten point plan. It is weeks old. But I am fine letting Trump pretend it’s brand new and he forced it out of them.
