🗓️ ONE WEEK AWAY – FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION WITH NADINE STROSSEN In one week, Runnymede’s University of Ottawa Chapter, in partnership with the Institute for Liberal Studies @Liberal_Studies (ILS), welcomes Nadine Strossen (FIRE @TheFIREorg) for a discussion on freedom of expression, in conversation with Dean Kristen Boon @ProfKristenBoon (University of Ottawa). A former President of the American Civil Liberties Union (1991–2008), Strossen has spent decades defending robust protections for free speech and civil liberties. The conversation will explore the role of expressive freedom in sustaining open debate and democratic society. ⚠️ Room Change: The event will now take place in Fauteux Hall, Room 302. 🕦 11:45 AM Register by scanning the QR code or clicking here: theils.ca/for-students/o… We hope to see you there!

In 1980, Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose was published—along with a 10-part TV series. As notable as the ideas in each episode was Friedman’s approach to the discussion portion—favouring robust debate and long-format conversation to short-form slogans or angry talking points.

In 1859, John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty was published, and it remains one of the most influential works on individual freedom and free expression. You can access a copy of On Liberty under the Classical Liberalism section on our Resources page: theils.ca/resources/

@Liberal_Studies That may be in your view, but I don’t think it is morally defensible to tell a minority community that they are being too sensitive over the generalization and watering down of their holidays, celebrations, and memorials.

New rule: If you’re going to wear my culture as a costume in your retail store (playing generic Christmas music, having a tree, etc) you must name “Christmas” in your greetings. No more Christmas appropriation.

Here’s @GeoffRuss3 in @WDiminishment on why we need to take drastic measures re: Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside: “Right now, the status quo is the embodiment of cruelty. It is cruel to see people overdose in a bus shelter. It is spiritually defeating to send firefighters into the same SRO week after week. It is infuriating to see public servants waste their time lecturing about whether or not it is dehumanizing to call somebody ‘homeless,’ or a ‘person experiencing homelessness.’ “Involuntary treatment is not a moderate course of action. If it is a radical solution, so be it.”
Geoff Russ 🍁@GeoffRuss3

Involuntary treatment is not a moderate solution, but who can look at the Downtown Eastside and think anything short of a radical strategy will save its people and the neighbourhood itself? Once the necessary treatment facilities are built, the disaster on the DTES could be ended within 48 hours. Liberty is a privilege reserved for those able to exercise it responsibly. Those suffering from severe addiction are robbed of both choice and sound mind. We should not abdicate our duty to our fellow citizens by letting them wander the alleys like wild animals. The current approach is not compassion, but nothing short of cruelty. My first for @WDiminishment withoutdiminishment.com/p/involuntary-…
