Excited to release new repo: nanochat! (it's among the most unhinged I've written). Unlike my earlier similar repo nanoGPT which only covered pretraining, nanochat is a minimal, from scratch, full-stack training/inference pipeline of a simple ChatGPT clone in a single, dependency-minimal codebase. You boot up a cloud GPU box, run a single script and in as little as 4 hours later you can talk to your own LLM in a ChatGPT-like web UI. It weighs ~8,000 lines of imo quite clean code to: - Train the tokenizer using a new Rust implementation - Pretrain a Transformer LLM on FineWeb, evaluate CORE score across a number of metrics - Midtrain on user-assistant conversations from SmolTalk, multiple choice questions, tool use. - SFT, evaluate the chat model on world knowledge multiple choice (ARC-E/C, MMLU), math (GSM8K), code (HumanEval) - RL the model optionally on GSM8K with "GRPO" - Efficient inference the model in an Engine with KV cache, simple prefill/decode, tool use (Python interpreter in a lightweight sandbox), talk to it over CLI or ChatGPT-like WebUI. - Write a single markdown report card, summarizing and gamifying the whole thing. Even for as low as ~$100 in cost (~4 hours on an 8XH100 node), you can train a little ChatGPT clone that you can kind of talk to, and which can write stories/poems, answer simple questions. About ~12 hours surpasses GPT-2 CORE metric. As you further scale up towards ~$1000 (~41.6 hours of training), it quickly becomes a lot more coherent and can solve simple math/code problems and take multiple choice tests. E.g. a depth 30 model trained for 24 hours (this is about equal to FLOPs of GPT-3 Small 125M and 1/1000th of GPT-3) gets into 40s on MMLU and 70s on ARC-Easy, 20s on GSM8K, etc. My goal is to get the full "strong baseline" stack into one cohesive, minimal, readable, hackable, maximally forkable repo. nanochat will be the capstone project of LLM101n (which is still being developed). I think it also has potential to grow into a research harness, or a benchmark, similar to nanoGPT before it. It is by no means finished, tuned or optimized (actually I think there's likely quite a bit of low-hanging fruit), but I think it's at a place where the overall skeleton is ok enough that it can go up on GitHub where all the parts of it can be improved. The best thing that ever happened to me was losing everything. I made a name for myself in 2021 sharing gaudy PnLs making millions trading recklessly. At my peak I had over 8 figures and I was discontent. I was never grateful for what I had because of the dream of how much more I could have. I was so enamored by the pride of my achievements, I lost sight of what was really important. I didn’t have time for my family or friendships. I wasn’t disciplined physically and let myself get overweight. My faith took a complete backseat. I would justify not being charitable because “if I waited to give I could have more to trade and make more so that I could give more later”, but really it was just an excuse to be greedy. All of that was taken away multiple times over. And for a little bit - it felt like hell. It felt isolating. It felt defeating. But through being humbled, I found myself again. I got close with my friends again and prioritized time with my family. I made sure to get my health back in line and routinely go to the gym too. Most importantly, I once again found my faith. Not that I had lost it before, but it had definitely taken a backseat to the idols of greed and pride. I found that my relationship with the Lord and pursuing Him is where real joy comes from. I found that serving others and seeing them grow in their faith was better than any 10x I’ve ever gotten. James 4:13-17 says “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” So much of our timeline is about chasing after the next big win, and it can be easy to feel like you’re never doing enough. It’s especially difficult when things are climbing again and you feel sidelined. I’ve got news for you from experience - if your definition of success in life is purely financial or purely popularity, you’ll never have enough. You’ll always feel an emptiness that no amount of money or followers will fill. You have to find something greater to live for, and I believe the answer to that purpose is a relationship with Jesus. It doesn’t mean your life will be perfect. I’m far from perfect and I know it. But I do strive to be a better version of myself every day, and in the midst of my failures I know I have a God who loves me despite my imperfections. A God who has a perfect plan for my life regardless of how much I make or lose or win or fail in the world’s eyes. I just wanted to share this because as fun as up only is, I know some of y’all are still hurting from where things have been. And I wanted you to know there’s hope. Never give up.

Until Crypto goes back to innovating and providing REAL value I feel like I'm wasting my time trying to convince others to see how greedy and delusional this space has become. Money is being extracted at an accelerated rate from loyal crypto believers to outsiders who could care less. It started with the VCs, then the exchanges, ETFs, then the celebs, then influencers, and now it's down to people taking from each other. PumpFun found a way to drain hundreds of millions from the space while diluting what was an already oversaturated market. Large centralized exchanges became the gate keepers listing whatever tokens made them the most money. A pay to play model that punished good projects and rewarded slimy ones. Rugs have become acceptable. CTOs an excuse for a dev to rug twice. Utility no longer having utility. Delusion is now required to feel normalcy and if you dare speak out against any of this you become the villian. The solution? Wait patiently for things to break so that the space is ready to go back to the way it was. Decentralization, quality over quantity, projects owned by those using them, NFTs being used for utility and not just art, memes back to being fun and not diluted, and healthy competition on who can innovate faster. Building products that get adoption levels higher and see integration into the lives of everyday people. We need Crypto 2.0
