The party monologue might be the most underrated disturbing scene in Obsession.
What starts as a casual gathering takes a bizarre turn when Wish Nikki launches into a rambling Hansel and Gretel story, twisting a familiar fairy tale into something deeply unsettling. The room falls silent, her friends exchange nervous looks, and for the first time, everyone begins to see that the “perfect” girlfriend Bear wished for isn’t behaving like a real person at all.
Behind the scene, the sequence was designed to create discomfort without relying on horror imagery or violence. Instead, Curry Barker lets Nikki’s unnatural speech patterns, awkward pauses, and increasingly warped interpretation of the story do the work. The camera lingers on the group’s reactions, making the audience feel trapped in the conversation right alongside them.
It’s a masterclass in social horror. Nobody can explain exactly what’s wrong, but everyone can feel it. And that’s what makes the scene so memorable.

“Do you like me? Because if you do, now is the time to tell me”
Nikki wasn’t lying here. I think that right up until the moment she says this, she is open to the possibility of dating Bear and seeing where it goes. But when Bear shows his cowardice and insecurity once again as he replies basically “we’re great friends”, she closes that door metaphorically by physically turning her back on him and leaving. Then he makes the wish, and all hell breaks loose. Just my 2 cents!

How I Met Your Mother s08e20: In the episode “The Time Travellers”, Ted laments on what to do with the extra time he’d have if he went back in time to that point in his life from the present where he’s recanting his story, and chooses with almost no hesitation to go see Tracy, his future wife, just to spend an extra 45 days with her. In the finale, it’s shown that Tracy had been dead for years, recontextualizing his speech from a wish to have an extra 45 days with the one you love, to a wish to have an extra 45 days with the one you love while they’re alive

Obsession (2026): At the beginning of the movie, Ian gives Bear harsh advice in how to approach Nikki, advises him to just be casual about it rather than vulnerable, and to call her a nickname she’s sensitive about. Later in the film, Sarah reveals than Ian and Nikki had been hooking up for 2 years, recontextualizing the first scene from a guy giving his friend advice, to Ian purposefully giving bad advice/advice rooted in hookup culture
