The Sherlock lab will open in 2025 at UC Santa Cruz in the Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology Department! We will study viral RNA structures that regulate translation. I couldn’t be more excited for this next stage in my career. Go Banana Slugs!

To my biochemists out there - does anyone have advice for when your Biorad setup for pouring SDS-PAGE gels just keeps leaking? We’ve tried parafilm along the bottom and up the edges, different of the grey foam, and new plates, but nothing seems to help!

Looking for a needle in a haystack. #ActiveLearning paper published pre-pandemic (2016-2019 ish) that highlighted how not all active learning strategies work for all professors/classrooms. Likely in #STEM. Included table with recs in discussion. #SoTL #ChemEd

I remember feeling discouraged after reading it… that my evidence based practices might not be effective. And that the efficacy of these strategies also depended on growth mindset and/or inclusive practices.

Two things that do not go well together: kiddo stomach bugs and grading culinary chemistry recipe reflections. 🤢

I’m a “being on time is being five min early” person and this morning my 7 yo told me “being on time is not important” and I…. I was not the best parent this morning.

I spent the week coordinating dance recital rehearsals and managing costumes and gear…. So my 4 yo could tell me she waved to daddy (and only daddy) from the stage.

@mattbencole We started class with a “guess the song” game where the songs all related to the topic. Yes, it took time. But they were all waaaay more awake after, a bit more energized, and ready to go. You can also delay or cancel an assignment (or make it xc).

Fellow profs: what strategies do you use to re-energize a class when it hits a slump? In one of my sections, we already have a critical mass of students who aren't reading or participating. In my experience, getting mad about it just makes the vibes even worse. So instead... ?

@julieapollock @arielmaelambe This! My first couple of years I wore jeans just a couple times and it was almost always with a nice top and/or a blazer.

@arielmaelambe The number is days I wear jeans has increased significantly the longer I have been a professor. Lab classes are almost always some type of jeans now…
