“The needs go beyond hospital care and medicine… We need food, water, and shelter. Without these, survival here will not be possible.”

“No-one should be denied care or pushed back from a hospital because of a medical test that was never designed to determine a person’s legal status.”

🔴 Sudan/Chad: Violent attacks continue in Tina, Sudan, at the border with Chad. On 16 March, our teams and Chadian health authorities received 123 wounded people at a newly-built hospital in Tine, Chad; 17 died in hospital and 66 arrived in serious condition.
“This new hospital lacks everything. We treat patients without water or electricity, using a generator and solar panels. With the massive influx of patients, our stock of medicines is running out, and it is difficult to get more,” says one of our staff, who fears another arrival of patients.
After responding to several mass casualty events in February, the former hospital in Tine, Chad, supported by MSF, had to relocate due to insecurity. The situation is worsening for displaced people who continue to flee Sudan. They are in desperate need of aid and protection.

🚨 Nigeria: On 16 March, three suicide bomb attacks were reported in Maiduguri, Borno state, killing 23 people and injuring more than 100. We sent medical teams to support local authorities in treating the wounded at two hospitals in Maiduguri where 108 patients are being treated.
“At the State Specialist hospital, the emergency room was full of patients with trauma injuries. We stabilised them, dressed wounds, and referred critical patients to University of Maiduguri Teaching hospital where we had another team,” says Dr Kikwaya, MSF medical team leader.
The blasts began shortly after 7:00 pm and targeted several locations. The main gate of the teaching hospital, where we support the diphtheria treatment unit, was targeted in one of the attacks. No patient or staff in the unit was injured in the incident.

🚨 Gaza: On 15 March, Israeli strikes killed 13 people and injured many more during attacks in Deir El-Balah, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. In response, our teams received nine patients at our field hospital.
In the morning, we received four patients: an 11-year-old boy who was dead on arrival and his three siblings (aged 2, 6, and 13 years) with moderate injuries. Both parents were killed. In the afternoon, our team treated five more patients with shrapnel injuries, including severe cases.
The injured children lost their mother in the attack, who was pregnant with twins. “She was due in three months. Now, the kids lost both parents and their sibling. The scene was horrific. Bodies flew in the air and shrapnel exploded everywhere,” says the children’s aunt.
Israeli attacks continue to kill and injure people in Gaza despite the ceasefire. In the aftermath, patients will endure long-term, life-altering physical and psychological wounds. We are providing trauma, surgical and rehabilitative care, as well as mental health support.

“When I came here during my retirement, MSF attended to me and provided free medication. Without their support, many of us would not be alive today.”

As we conclude our response to cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, and as many people begin returning to their homes, we’re reminded there are marginalised communities and those still living in temporary shelters needing ongoing support.

Nigeria: For three years, we worked with the Ministry of Health to ensure remote communities in Akor and Old Ndibeji could access free and comprehensive healthcare.

🚨 Drone strikes continue to kill civilians in Sudan. This must end now.
This morning, a drone strike carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces hit fuel reserves at the Adikong market in Sudan, near the border with Chad. The strike triggered massive explosions injuring many civilians and killing four people, who burned to death in the blast.
“At the MSF-supported hospital in Adré, Chad, 23 injured civilians—including four women and seven children under 15—have arrived so far. In less than one hour, patient numbers jumped from five to 23,” says Gado Mahamadou, our head of mission in Chad.
This is the second deadly drone strike in Adikong in less than a month. We remind all parties to the conflict of their obligation to protect civilians in this relentless war.
