I'm not a Hoppean. My intellectual home is much closer to Rothbard, and there's definitely daylight between those two even if they did share a mentor/student relationship. His covenant community framework is mostly solid theory. Combine private property and voluntary association by allowing communities to set their own standards. That's not even radical imo... and is consistent with libertarianism. Hoppe spent 40 years associated with the Mises Institute. His argumentation ethics work, whatever you think of where he took it, is a serious philosophical contribution that millions of people have engaged with. "Democracy: The God That Failed" is a libertarian must-read. You can disagree with his conclusions and still recognize the intellectual weight of his arguments. The Mises Institute pulled his fellowship designation in response to his "Quo Vadis" piece, which was essentially Hoppe publicly asking hard questions about the direction of the institution he helped build. And their response was to strip the only distinguished "Senior Fellowship" they'd ever granted anyone. I don't have to agree with everything a man writes to think he earned better than that. The Mises Institute exists in large part because of the intellectual tradition Hoppe helped carry forward. Disagree with him, or criticize him... sure. But it's insane to pretend he didn't earn a seat at the table he helped build.
