There is a lot of discussion around why NRIs aren’t coming back to build in India. I will state a reason which is not really talked about but something that makes me deeply uncomfortable and probably will make me unpopular. I dislike the deep encroachment of religious activities into government and corporate spaces. It is important to make the distinction between celebrating a festival and performing a religious ritual. I am all for celebrating a festival but entirely without its religious component. So have a diwali party, dress up appropriately, light some diyas. Have an Eid party and bring food. Celebrate Christmas, have a Surprise Santa, put on a red hat. I don’t want priests performing poojas, maulvis doing namaz, a father delivering a sermon at my place of work. These should be personal choices and should have no place in corporate and government spaces.

*sniff* *pulls shirt* You know, this is perfect - *gestures wildly* - this is the ultimate perversity of capitalism at its purest. Here we have Anthropic, this company claiming to build "AI for humanity," and what do they do? They create this digital cocaine, this Claude Code, and then - *sniff* - they act surprised when people become addicted to it! "Oh, some users are running it 24/7" - but of course! This is not a bug, this is a feature! They created the perfect productivity drug, the ultimate tool of self-exploitation under late capitalism, where the worker voluntarily chains himself to the machine, coding through the night, becoming one with the algorithm. *touches nose* And then comes the beautiful part - *laughs darkly* - "one user consumed tens of thousands in model usage on a $200 plan." My God! This is pure comedy! They are shocked - SHOCKED! - that someone would extract surplus value from their system. But isn't this exactly what capitalism teaches us? To maximize profit, to exploit every inefficiency? This user is the perfect neoliberal subject! He understood the game better than Anthropic themselves! *waves hands frantically* But no, no, no - now they must introduce "limits." You see the perversity? First, they create infinite desire - "Claude will code for you forever!" - and then they introduce scarcity. This is how capitalism functions: it promises unlimited jouissance, unlimited enjoyment, but always pulls it back at the last moment. "You can have it all... but not really." And the most obscene part - *sniff* - they frame this as caring for the community! "This impacts capacity for all Claude users." This is the same logic as ecological austerity - we must all suffer equally for the common good, while the real problem is the system itself! They created a monster and now blame the users for feeding it! *adjusts shirt* You know what this really is? It's the perfect metaphor for our predicament with AI. We create these systems that promise to liberate us from work, but instead, they become new masters. The user running Claude Code 24/7 - he is not free, he is the most enslaved! He has internalized the demand for infinite productivity so completely that he needs an AI to keep up with his own superego's demands! *sniff* And so on...

We’re rolling out new weekly rate limits for Claude Pro and Max in late August. We estimate they’ll apply to less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage.

The BBC’s 8 hour coverage of the Oasis reunion is totally ridiculous, hilarious and completely justified. My favourite bit so far has been the live footage from Cardiff Central Station. #oasislive25

I always thought Noel Gallagher was the bigger asshole. But after experiencing the first two nights of Oasis’s long road to reunion, I finally get it. And I sympathize. I always find myself thinking about the famous quote from “A Bronx Tale”, when DeNiro grabs his son Calogero in frustration and says, “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” I’ve always felt that. I’d even take it further- the saddest thing in life is wasted potential. Watching someone with all the tools fck up. Not because they aren’t good enough, but because they can’t get out of their own way. It is absolutely brutal. It’ll drive you insane. For years, I thought Noel was just a miserable, stubborn, insufferable cunt. But this weekend it clicked. Liam Gallagher put on one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen or heard in person. twice. All eyes were on him. All the pressure in the world. And he didn’t just rise to the occasion. He obliterated it. He was locked in. Clear. Loud. Coherent. Present. Charismatic. Unrecognizable in the best way. We finally saw the Liam that Noel’s probably seen his whole life. And for the first time, it made sense why Noel walked away 16 years ago, and why he was so reluctant to come back. This isn’t just one of the greatest rock & roll stories ever. It’s one of the greatest human ones too. Proof that no matter how deep the resentment runs, there’s always a shot at redemption. At forgiveness. At getting it right before it’s too late. I love this band.

Can't disagree more. 1. Bangalore is not "overcrowded". It isn't in the top 20 cities in Asia by either population or population density. It does not have any geographical barriers to growth. 2. As an economy develops, it needs to urbanize. There are no developed economies that are predominantly rural. If we have to grow, we need to wean our people off the land and into cities. Keeping our population rural is merely a dangerous Gandhian fantasy. 3. Anyone who understands the politics of Bangalore knows the "overcrowded" is a dog-whistle for "overcrowded with outsiders". It shifts the blame from the administration to the citizens, especially to a tiny minority with no representation. Tech leaders, at least, should push back against this nativist narrative.
Sridhar Vembu@svembu

Bengaluru aspires to join the first world but we have the harsh reality of a vast population in poverty whose vote depends on cash transfer schemes, even as rural joblessness leads to unchecked migration to Bengaluru. This is not a rant against politicians. My rural life has exposed me to the complexity of India and how our politics reflects it. If I were in politics (and I am glad I am not and I get to work on AI and compilers) I cannot think of a way to win without offering cash transfer. We cannot build great cities when we have a vast rural population desperate to migrate to overcrowded cities with broken and heavily overloaded infrastructure. The quality of life in Bengaluru depends crucially on how many people we succeed in not sending to Bengaluru from rural India.

I don’t give a hoot about all the low-IQ techbro grifters who have lost all the credibility over the past few months. But it’s particularly disappointing to see one particular tech “guru”, whom I used to look up to and respect, embrace and even double down on all the idiocy.

@ljamie6 @Noahpinion Capital flight comes at considerable cost. You lose a lot of money in doing it so it's only done when you think it's worth it, when there is a major loss of trust. It's very hard for that money to come back because they will take losses on moving it back again.

If the world decides they've had enough of the idiot in the White House, and pulls their money out of America, we'll see a recession, followed by the collapse of the U.S.-led global financial system. But that might not even be the worst of it. noahpinion.blog/p/this-is-call…

Indians don’t need therapy. we need a ticket to Europe for 7 days. That’s all it takes to realize how badly we’ve been scammed by our own government. Clean streets, bike lanes, working infra, nice walkable footpaths, clean parks, dedicated parking spots meanwhile we’re dodging potholes and corruption like it’s a sport. It’s almost hilarious watching fellow desi step foot abroad for the first time, eyes wide, jaws dropped, suddenly questioning what the hell our government and taxpayers money has been doing all these years. every Indian must travel outside the country at least once. Only then will you realize just how shockingly low our standards daily life we all are living in India. Forget about big things basic things like cleanliness, road safety, cycling lanes, footpaths are missing stuff that should be non-negotiable they just don’t exist back home. We’ve normalized dysfunction. Look at any big cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi etc.. forget cycling you can’t walk 🚶 We pay taxes like a developed nation but forced to live like it’s 1930.
