10 janvier 1475: Bataille de Vaslui La bataille de Vaslui opposa l’armée de la principauté de Moldavie, commandée par son prince Ștefan cel Mare (Étienne le Grand), à une armée ottomane dirigée par Süleyman Pacha, beylerbey de Roumélie. Elle constitue l’une des plus lourdes défaites subies par les Ottomans en Europe au XVe siècle. L’armée moldave comptait environ 20 000 hommes. Elle se composait pour moitié de Moldaves et pour moitié de contingents alliés. Parmi les forces moldaves figuraient environ 7 500 paysans conscrits, faiblement armés, et 2 500 soldats professionnels. Les alliés de Ștefan comprenaient près de 5 000 Sicules envoyés par le royaume de Hongrie, 2 000 cavaliers hongrois, 2 000 cavaliers polono-lituaniens, ainsi qu’environ 1 000 Valaques. En face, l’armée ottomane était nettement supérieure en nombre, avec environ 40 000 hommes. Elle comprenait des janissaires, des archers azabs, l’infanterie légère des yaya, la cavalerie lourde des sipahis et la cavalerie légère des akıncı. À ces forces s’ajoutait un contingent d’environ 10 000 Valaques, fournis par le voïvode Basarab Laiota, vassal des Ottomans, dont la loyauté restait toutefois douteuse. Bien que théoriquement vassal de l’Empire ottoman, Ștefan avait cessé de verser le tribut à la Porte dès 1470. En réponse, le sultan Mehmed II lui adressa un ultimatum exigeant le paiement de cinq années d’arriérés et la cession des cités stratégiques de Chilia et Akkerman, seuls accès moldaves à la mer Noire. Devant le refus catégorique du prince moldave, Mehmed II ordonna à Suleyman Pacha de préparer une expédition punitive. L’armée ottomane se rassembla à Sofia en septembre 1474. L’armée ottomane pénétra en Moldavie en décembre 1474. Ștefan appliqua une stratégie méthodique de terre brûlée, détruisant villages, vivres et abris afin d’épuiser l’ennemi. Les Ottomans furent constamment harcelés par des troupes légères moldaves expertes en embuscades. Le froid hivernal, le manque de ravitaillement et l’absence de logements aggravèrent encore la situation de l’armée d’invasion. Informés par leurs éclaireurs de l’existence de villages apparemment épargnés près de Vaslui, les Ottomans se dirigèrent vers cette région, sans se douter du piège qui les attendait. Pour atteindre Vaslui, où se trouvait le camp principal moldave, les Ottomans devaient franchir la rivière Bârlad au lieu-dit Podul Înalt (« le Haut Pont »). Le terrain était idéalement choisi : un pont étroit, une vallée encaissée, bordée de collines boisées sur trois côtés, et un sol marécageux rendant les manœuvres de l'armée ottomane difficiles. Le 10 janvier 1475, sous un froid intense et dans un épais brouillard limitant fortement la visibilité, le combat s’engagea. Les archers et les paysans moldaves restaient dissimulés dans les forêts, aux côtés de leur prince et de la cavalerie lourde des boyards. Ștefan fit d’abord avancer des musiciens au centre de la vallée. Le son des tambours et des trompettes, amplifié par le relief et le brouillard, donna à Suleyman Pacha l’illusion que l’ensemble de l’armée moldave se trouvait devant lui. En réalité, seule l’infanterie régulière moldave occupait le centre, solidement retranchée derrière un remblai de terre hérissé de pieux, avec l’ordre strict de tenir la position. Lorsque la moitié de l’armée ottomane eut traversé le pont, l’artillerie moldave ouvrit le feu, bientôt suivie par des volées de flèches tirées depuis trois directions différentes. Sous le poids des troupes et les bombardements, le pont s’effondra. Entre 20 000 et 25 000 Ottomans se retrouvèrent piégés dans la vallée, sans possibilité de retraite (1/2).

The British police, once the envy of the world, now seem to spend more resources investigating "non-crime hate incidents" and painting their patrol cars in rainbow colors than solving burglaries. It is a nation desperately clinging to the aesthetics of tradition—the Royals, the pomp, the tea—while its institutions have been hollowed out by a progressive rot that makes a California university campus look conservative. They want the swagger of the 19th century but are paralyzed by the emotional fragility of the 21st. Then there is France, the angry, chain-smoking aunt of Europe who refuses to admit she’s been unemployed for decades. France’s hangover manifests as a permanent state of insurrection masquerading as "civic engagement." Their identity is split between a delusional elite who still think Paris is the capital of the universe and a populace that expresses its "joie de vivre" by burning down bus stops every Thursday. The French suffer from a Napoleonic complex without a Napoleon; they demand the living standards of a conquering empire while working a 35-hour week and retiring at an age when most Americans are just hitting their stride. They preach "Republican values" and aggressive secularism, yet the state has lost control over vast swathes of its own suburbs. France is essentially a beautiful, open-air museum where the curators are on strike, the guards are afraid of the visitors, and the management is busy lecturing the rest of the world on "grandeur" while the electricity bill goes unpaid. Finally, we have Germany, the neurotic giant that has decided the only way to atone for its history is to commit slow-motion industrial suicide. Germany’s post-imperial hangover is a moral autoimmune disease: the country is so terrified of its own shadow that it has replaced national pride with aggressive self-flagellation and recycling regulations. Their identity is built on being the "Moral Superpower," which practically translates to shutting down their perfectly functional nuclear power plants to burn dirty coal, all while lecturing their neighbors on carbon footprints. It is a nation of engineers who have engineered a society that doesn't work. The German spirit, once defined by efficiency and discipline, has mutated into a paralyzed bureaucracy where filling out the correct form is more important than the outcome. They are so desperate to avoid being "threatening" that they’ve become essentially a large NGO with an army that has broomsticks for rifles, terrified that showing any backbone might be interpreted as a relapse.
