I am ready to give you anything you ask for… but I will not bring my Lala outside. He is just a baby, and you have serpents around your neck. He might get scared.” Shiva smiled and replied: “Mother, your Kanhaiya is ‘the Time of time, the Brahman of Brahman, the wealth of Shiva Himself, and the entire treasure of saints.’ He cannot be frightened by anyone, nor can anyone’s evil eye affect Him. He knows who I am.” Yashoda ji was astonished: “What are you saying? I myself could not recognize you till now. My Lala is only three days old—how can he recognize you?” Shiva said softly: “Mother, I have come from far away with the hope of having Darshan of your Lala. Without His Darshan, I will not even drink water. I will sit here for twelve years if needed, but I will not leave without seeing Him. It is for the Darshan of Shri Krishna that I have taken the form of a sadhu.” Yashoda ji folded her hands and said, “Maharaj, this stubbornness is not right. I will not bring the child outside.” So, Shiva went and sat beneath a tree, waiting with deep devotion. Love is always mutual—just as the devotee longs for God’s darshan, God too yearns for the devotee’s darshan. Meanwhile, little Kanhaiya somehow came to know that Shiva has come and Mother is not taking Him outside. He began to cry loudly, raising His tiny hands, indicating that He wanted to go out. Still, Yashoda did not take Him. The gopis rushed in, surprised. “Kanhaiya didn’t cry for three days at all—what happened to Him today?” One gopi said, “Mother, that sadhu’s lips are moving. Believe it or not, he must have chanted some mantra. That is why the child is crying. I’ve never seen a sadhu like him.” Another gopi said, “Perhaps Shivji Himself has come to bless Kanhaiya. Mother, let me take the child to him; he will give Him his blessings.” Even then, Yashoda didn’t agree. Finally, they called Rishi Shandilya and narrated everything. Rishi Shandilya understood the whole matter. He said, “The child is crying for the sadhu sitting under the tree. There is a bond between that sadhu and Kanhaiya across many births. It is not proper that such a sadhu sits hungry in the courtyard. Take Kanhaiya to him.” Kanhaiya was decorated beautifully. Still anxious, Yashoda told her maid, “Tell the sadhu Maharaj—look at the child, but do not stare constantly. He might get the evil eye.” Shiva was brought into the courtyard. And finally, He won. Yashoda had no choice but to bring Kanhaiya. (Imagine the scene…) In front of everyone, the moment Kanhaiya was brought out, His crying stopped. Shiva and Kanhaiya’s eyes met. A gentle smile appeared on the cheeks of both Hari (Narayana) and Har (Shiva). The moment Lala’s darshan happened, Shiva slipped into deep samadhi. The moment Shiva appeared before Him, Kanhaiya began to laugh joyfully. Yashoda was astonished: “Inside the house, he was crying so much… and the moment he saw this sadhu, he began to laugh! This is no ordinary sadhu.” A wave of divine bliss filled the courtyard. Shiva beheld Kanhaiya, and Kanhaiya beheld Shiva devotee and Lord, Lord and devotee, eternally bound in love.
