#OTD 28 April 1603 Queen Elizabeth I's funeral was held in #WestminsterAbbey. The last Tudor monarch had ruled for 44 years and 4 months and was deeply mourned by her people. According to John Stow, an eyewitness, there was 'such a general sighing, groaning, and weeping' as the Queen's coffin came into view 'as the like hath not been seen or known in the memory of man; neither doth any history mention any people, time, or state, to make like lamentation for the death of their sovereign'. Pictured: Helena Snakenborg, Dowager Marchioness of Northampton, as Chief Mourner at the Queen's funeral. Helena, from Sweden, was one of Queen Elizabeth's closest friends and her longest serving Chief Lady of Honour. In this role Helena often accompanied the Queen on her public engagements and had the seat of honour beside her. You can read more about the Queen's funeral, and all the women who escorted her to her grave, serving their royal mistress for the last time, in my book 'Elizabeth I's Ladies, Gentlewomen and Maids: The Women who Served the Tudor Queen'. My book lists all the women who served at the funeral, the role they served in, and the livery they were given for the occasion by rank. amazon.co.uk/dp/1399094610/ #ElizabethI #TudorHistory #TheTudors #OTD #OTDfunerals #elizabethifuneral #ladiesinwaiting #Elizabeth1 #queenelizabethi #virginqueen #gloriana #maidsofhonour #seventeenthcentury #gentlewomen #historybooks
