COVER 6 is trending right now, but how do you play it? Everyone knows what it looks like on paper, but how does it play out on the field? This is a great play to study. How are you coaching it? Who gets a plus and who gets a minus? I've sent this to 3 different NFL DCs—they all gave different answers!! Curious to see how others view it. I'll post my breakdown later. Coaching is about details, but which details? Remember, We cannot give players complex algorithms to solve - rule and keys need to be simple and repeatable to hold up under pressure and unscripted looks. Assign 3 players most responsible for this play 1,2,3. This is a fun 1!!

@traceygere @AdamArchuleta I’m thinking they are keying crossers, especially once both TE/H chip release both safeties know they can match crossing routes with consequence. Which works well with CBs outside leverage and help coming from safeties inside on those routes.

@traceygere @AdamArchuleta I think they would have matched whatever cross concept came their way. But I could be completely wrong. Just a nice scheme and key against what Shanahan likes to do. Like I said, could be wrong but that’s what I see

@MilesHaley @AdamArchuleta I get Bryant’s reaction, no one else on his side of the field. I u/s Love doesn’t have a seam threat and CB is on nr 1. But I wouldn’t want the CB alone on a post with the whole field to cover. So how does Love know he can nail down on the cross and Bryant will close the post?

@traceygere @AdamArchuleta I think it might just a schematic thing based on how they open. Neither looked outside at all and both open inside. Niners run lots of cross concepts, it looks to me like the safeties are keying that. Love’s crosser is dig and Bryant’s is post.

@AdamArchuleta @traceygere A Super Bowl winning defense. Listened to Mike MacDonald at a coaching clinic this past offseason and the guy just communicates at such a high level. No wonder it worked out how it did this year.

@MilesHaley @traceygere I don't think people understand how much practice and reps it takes to get this type of coordination on this concept, and OC's like Shanahan know all the rules and counters!

@AdamArchuleta I totally agree! We run a ton of zone at my high school and I talk a ton of leverage and eyes. You have your tweaks dependent on opponent scheme, etc. Definitely easy to over coach DBs. See WRs, have the right leverage, good things happen from there. Obviously lots more detail.

I think that's the right idea. The hash marks make a difference for sure. I'll admit, I'm definitely more geared toward NFL game, Although I have coached high school the last few years. At any level I am a believer in reading QB in zone and try and close the post with backside safety as much as possible. what I AM NOT a believer in is trying to make C/4 play be the answer for and try to play every single route combo. That where IMO coaches go wrong.

@AdamArchuleta @traceygere Julian Love sees the H-back isn’t threatening deep and does a great job getting eyes back across to catch the crosser. Because they’re in MOD those safeties know CBs have outside taken care of so their eyes are looking for work back across to them.

@AdamArchuleta @traceygere Absolutely, as a niner fan, I see them run these concepts as good as any. 2x2 set and corners are MOD. Coby Bryant does a great job as WR1 to his side breaks on the cross he gets eyes across to match the post.

@AdamArchuleta So, in that case see that single post working back to you. Should be a tough throw between safety. C2 corner is catching that over route working to him that 1/4 safety chased. LBs did a good job on crossers. Would love C2 safety to have some better leverage.

@AdamArchuleta The details of NFL to high school are obviously so different. I don’t like my 1/4 safety to cross the middle of the field. 3/2/1 read on trips and keep inside leverage of their most inside route to the trips side. One he crosses the center line, look for something working back.
