Let me explain something to the MAGA crowd, because clearly someone needs to. They seem to think NATO is cosmic room service. You pick up the phone, say “hello, we’re having a bit of a war here,” and thirty-one countries march to your rescue. A continental Uber for military adventures. That is not how it works. Article 5 is a mutual defense clause. The clue is in the word mutual. And it has been triggered exactly once in NATO’s entire history. After September 11. When America was attacked. Not Europe. America. Every NATO member showed up. They went to Afghanistan. They fought. They bled. They died. In America’s war. On America’s behalf. Now imagine they hadn’t. Over 1,100 allied soldiers died in Afghanistan. British, Canadian, German, Danish, Polish. And yes, even Ukrainian soldiers, who had no NATO obligation whatsoever. Gone. Without them, those are American names on those graves. Sons from Ohio. Fathers from Georgia. Kids from Nebraska who never came home. Then there is the money. NATO allies spent over 100 billion dollars on a war that started on American soil. Without that, Washington pays every cent. On top of the 2 to 3 trillion the war already cost. And without allied bases across Europe and Central Asia, American supply lines collapse entirely. Without British forces in Helmand and Canadians in Kandahar, the Taliban reconstitutes in three years instead of ten. The gaps get filled one way. More American deployments. More American coffins arriving at Dover. Afghanistan was bloody. But NATO took the hit. Without them, every single one of those casualties would have had an American name. Trump called allies like these losers. Suckers. If you are a certain kind of broken person, that probably makes sense to you. But for the rest of us, what those soldiers did has a different name. Honor. The bond between men who have been in the same dirt, under the same fire. Between Brits and Americans, Frenchmen and Norwegians, Canadians and Danes. Not a diplomatic relationship. A blood bond. Brotherhood forged in places most people will never see and cannot imagine. In that culture, you do not mock a fallen ally. You do not sneer at the dead. It is the lowest thing a human being can do. Trump did it to a standing ovation. If you are a MAGA supporter travelling to NATO countries, understand this. There are no friendly pats on the back waiting for you. No one will buy you a beer. The governments who share your worldview sit in Minsk, Moscow and Pyongyang. Brutal dictatorships where journalists disappear, elections are theatre and dissent is a medical condition treated in basements. Not London. Not Paris. Not Rome, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin or Ottawa. You have abandoned the open societies, the free press, the rule of law, the places where people actually want to live. You traded the best of civilization for a very small, very dark room. Frankly, it serves you right. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

ICE guards are betting on which detainee will kill themselves next. The AP just exposed the savage conditions of a detention camp in El Paso. The Associated Press got inside Camp East Montana. What they found should be on the front page of every newspaper in this country until it closes. About 3,000 people packed in per day. Loud, unsanitary quarters crawling with insects. Food so scarce that detainees steal from each other just to eat. Disease spreading through filthy rooms, showers, and restrooms that go uncleaned. People losing weight. People unable to see a doctor. People losing their minds. Staff made nearly one 911 call per day in the camp's first five months. One call captures a man sobbing after being assaulted by another detainee. Another has a doctor describing a man banging his head against a wall while expressing suicidal thoughts. A nurse calls about a pregnant woman in severe pain with coronavirus. Detainees suffering seizures, some resulting in serious head trauma. Ages ranged from a 19-year-old who fell from a bunk to a 79-year-old who couldn't breathe. And then there's the detail that should haunt this administration for the rest of its existence. Owen Ramsingh, a former property manager from Columbia, Missouri, who spent weeks in the camp before being deported to the Netherlands, told the AP he overheard a security guard talking about a betting pool among the staff. They were wagering on which detainee would be next to die by suicide. The guard said he had put $500 in. The total pot rode on the outcome. Ramsingh said the talk was particularly devastating because he had contemplated suicide himself. Guards are gambling on the deaths of people in their custody. People who are hungry. People who are sick. People who are begging for help through 911 calls that come in every single day. And the staff turned it into a game. This is not some rogue facility. This is the system working exactly as this administration designed it. Overcrowded by policy. Underfed by neglect. Understaffed by choice. They built a place where human beings deteriorate and then the people paid to watch over them place bets on who breaks first. The AP has the data. The recordings. The interviews. The court filings. This is documented. This is real. This is happening right now in El Paso, Texas, in the United States of America. Share this. Do not let them bury it under another news cycle.

Raskin: The whole “America First” thing is such a fraud because, in fact, Trump and the MAGA elite spend all of their time with rich people from other countries—either wealthy dictators, people like Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán, the leaders of the authoritarian states they emulate, or businessmen—or some combination of both. They’re not interested in “America First.” That was just a completely predatory slogan they used to get votes. But they’ve been selling out the country day in and day out.

David Frum and Jessica Tarlov tell it as it is as Trump spirals out the f control because nobody is prepared to bail him out. He went into Iran like Putin went in to Ukraine, in search of the quick win with a serving of self enrichment. He never told US allies and said he needed nobody. Now he’s pissed that nobody would piss on him if he was on fire. It’s time to pay the price I’m afraid and he doesn’t like it. He can say he’s going to walk away and leave others to clean up the mess, but that won’t help because he’s already set the wheels in motion to cripple the U.S. economy. Former president of Romania, Traian Basescu: "Donald Trump is reaping exactly what he has sown. He showed contempt for Europeans, he demeaned us, questioned the very existence of NATO and wanted to invade and annex Greenland, a territory that belongs to the European Union. The rejection shown today by European leaders is aimed not at the United States, but straight at Donald Trump. He comes out of this conflict humiliated, the Hormuz strait is now blocked, he failed to achieve regime change, failed to secure the uranium and proved himself incapable of defending his own allies in the Middle East. All the US allies in the Gulf that saw themselves as protected by the US were struck by Iran almost at will, whenever Iran wanted, with the US being either unwilling or unable to defend them. So Mr. Trump comes out of this with a terrible record. He started this war having absolutely no idea what he was doing, and even now, I don’t think this man is aware of or understands what he has done. Yes, Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons, but the way Trump thought he could solve that problem is one that only a child could come up with. This man still doesn’t understand what he has done and continues to be arrogant when asking us for help instead of admitting his mistake."

Some very good journalism from MSNBC, reporting on all the fabricated stories that Donald Trump has told over the last year. It’s embarrassing. The guy is either brazenly lying or riddled with dementia—likely both—but either way, that boy ain’t right.

SAVAGE TAKEDOWN — AGED LIKE FINE WINE: One of the most brutal political takedowns in American history. Watch Jamie Raskin absolutely demolish Byron "The GOP Butler" Donalds — exposing his constitutional illiteracy and pathetic Trump bootlicking in real time. Raskin went full savage mode, and Butler Donalds couldn't even finish his shift at the table. This is your candidate for governor, Florida? The man who confuses the Constitution with a Trump rally flyer? Dems hit harder… MAGA comes with rehearsed talking points and a fragile ego. Watch the Butler get schooled on camera.

🚨 White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt today: “Our nation was founded, almost 250 years ago, on Judeo-Christian values.” The Treaty of Tripoli. 1797. Signed by Founding Father John Adams. Ratified unanimously by the Senate: “The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” Thomas Jefferson — who wrote the Declaration of Independence — was a deist who literally cut the miracles out of his Bible. James Madison — the father of the Constitution — explicitly warned against the “diabolical hell conceived principle of persecution” by state religion. The First Amendment’s opening words: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” They put it first.

If there is precisely one thing you watch today, make it this. French Senator Claude Malhuret. A microphone. And the most magnificently savage dismantling of the Trump administration ever delivered in a language they almost certainly don’t speak. He covers Iran. He covers corruption. He covers the kind of staggering, industrial-scale incompetence that would get you fired from managing a car park. And he does it with the calm, unhurried certainty of a man who has read every page of the indictment and found it, if anything, worse than expected. France has never pretended to like these people. But this is contempt elevated to an art form. The kind of refined, aristocratic disdain that takes centuries of civilization to produce and approximately ninety seconds to deploy. Malhuret sounds like he is four seconds from the button. Not out of panic. Out of sheer, exhausted disgust. Honestly? Understandable. Watch it. Share it. The adults are speaking. Taylor: The day that I decided to quit that administration was the day when a mentor of mine from capitol hill had died. His name was John McCain. The flags were at half staff around the country, and the president was trying to call us in Australia on the other side of the world, to say, not put out a statement in honor of John McCain, but to say, raise the flags back up. I don't care if you agreed with John McCain or disagreed. It didn't matter like Bob Mueller, he served this country in uniform. He was a sitting united States senator. He deserved to be honored with the flags at half staff—for the president of the United States to be so petty, so small and petty, to tell us to raise the flags back up in an act of active dishonor, tells you everything you need to know about that man and his lack of integrity and character.

Lawrence O’Donnell: “Robert Mueller was everything Donald Trump could never be. Smart, highly educated, wise and faithful. Donald Trump’s deep and irreversible perversion blinds him to human decency. He does not know what it is. He does not know how to imitate it. Because Robert Mueller successfully proved Vladimir Putin and the Russian government did indeed interfere in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump, when Robert Mueller died, Donald Trump said, ‘good, I’m glad.’”
