@DrCasteelEM If looking at “end points” I would agree with you; however, at start of residency there can be a significant gap. In general a strong student at a weak school will do fine, a weak student at a strong school will do fine, but a weak student at a weak school can be trouble.

One thing I’ve realized during residency training is that there seems to be essentially zero correlation to the “tier” of medical school somebody went to and their medical knowledge or quality of doctor they end up becoming.

@drdamoeyes Some research protocols require certain equipment be used. Not uncommon for PEDIG studies in pediatric ophthalmology to have standard equipment requirements. I believe the DRS studies also used standardized equipment across study centers.

Why do people avoid tech? In this picture, the staff has access to a digital vision Thomson chart but has wheeled out an old logmar vision box and placed it in front of the digital screen. 🤣 Maybe the answer is as simple as... "Because it takes too long to switch on..."

@CherieEyeMD @jbcarmody I am of the belief that they could be well taught pediatric eye surgery over a 3 year period. Ophthalmology residency is only 39 months and these folks would be ahead of the game from a medical knowledge standpoint.

Interesting discussion on the APPD message board on the possibility of creating a pediatric ophthalmology pathway as a fellowship from a general pediatric residency. Lots of tradeoffs to consider - so you know what that means. Time to break it down, Winners & Losers™️ style.

@DrTraceyK @halbritz Wow, blast from the past… I used to help run that website for many years. It’s still a wealth of information.

@halbritz She should join Service Academy Forums which is a website with information on ROTC, the service academies, and the process to be successful in the application. It is free.

A sitting ovation for Dr Bijl-Witmer who seemingly commits the cardinal ophthalmology sin and actively recommends - wait for it - contact lenses for corneal abrasions. They're called bandaid lenses and you put ABx under them 🤯 #ICEM2023 #EyeCEM2023 @DGlaucomflecken

@eeyanmiller If you are doing the right thing for a patient I will defend you ‘til the end. As a resident these were powerful words to hear, knowing that if I accidentally upset someone in the name of doing the right thing for a patient leadership would have my back.

Next week is intern orientation for my first class as PD. I want to know: what piece of advice do you think would be most helpful for our incredible OBGYN intern class? And also, it’s weird that I have first day of school jitters for them! But I’m so pumped! 🙌🏻

@fuzzymittens Chief resident in Medicine and Pediatrics is different than that in others. Those who are actually graduates who stay on and serve as Chief Resident as a staff should absolutely include that on their CV. If you are a “Chief” simply by being in your last year then hard pass.

The @DeptofDefense Vision Research Program released the 2023 program announcements. The program supports impactful military-relevant vision research (@NatEyeInstitute has great collaborations with them!). @CDMRP Details (pre-applications due 7/14/2023): bit.ly/42PW6xS

Not the typical collection in an ophthalmology office, but I hope my ID and cardiology friends appreciate the attempt.

@dr_cellini @Jmarksloan Much of this confusion stems from what “chief resident” means. In surgery, Rads, anesthesia, etc this is just a senior resident. In IM, Peds, etc this is actually the “Chief of Residents” and is actually a staff position for a graduated resident.

@Jmarksloan How can it be the single most important factor on a fellowship application when it is the least objective aspect of the application? For instance, many residency programs just label the senior residents as “chiefs” w/ no extra responsibilities…

Being a chief resident is one of the biggest scams of medical training…a perceived more prestigious title for WAY more administrative work that takes away from important clinical training, and let’s not forget, minimal extra pay… #notworthit

All Command suites at @DoD_DHA military hospitals should be Service agnostic. As an XO at an Army hospital, I saw the advantages. Hospitals can maintain Service identity regardless of who sits in the C-Suite. It is time to move forward. @ArmyMedicine @NavyMedicine @USAFMedicine

@VipsMDMEd I try to call except it is nearly impossible sometimes. No primary team contact info in the chart, the intern that pages to their personal pager is now off bc they were the admitting team, and the attending in the chart went off service 2 weeks ago 😁.

@DrTraceyK @DrElsterUSUSoM USU is probably one of the few things keeping some National faculty holding out the good fight. AD positions, FacDev, research opportunities, and teaching our future colleagues are all so helpful!

During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, military surgeons achieved the highest survival rates in the history of warfare. We learned a great deal about treating combat wounds, but there is still more to learn.
