Three days ago I shared what I thought was a masterclass in market positioning: our dog had identified a high-yield opportunity zone beneath my 7-month-old’s high chair. Pure conviction. Quiet execution. Unmatched ROI.
Tonight, I witnessed Phase 2.
The other dogs have cottoned on.
What was once a blue ocean is now a red one.
The space beneath the table is fully saturated. Three competitors, one supply chain, and a baby whose throughput simply cannot scale to meet aggregate demand.
Margins are compressing. Tails are wagging defensively. The early mover advantage has evaporated.
A few hard-won lessons from the floor:
1. First-mover advantage is temporary. If your moat is “being under the table,” someone else will eventually crawl under the table.
2. Markets correct. What looked like infinite upside last week is now a zero-sum scramble for falling broccoli.
3.Differentiation matters. The dog who figures out the side angle, or pivots to the snack-time vertical, wins the next cycle.
We’re now in a mature market. Time to innovate, consolidate, or exit.
Who else is feeling the squeeze in their category right now?
